11. Gotta watch with that though
Usually fat-free has no fat but it has about triple the sugar and sodium of regular dressing to make up for the no fat part

16. Also...
If you want the benefits of the vitamins in the veggies, especially the Vitamin A, you'll need some fat to go with them. Some of them are fat-soluble, and your body won't absorb them without a little fat. So, a low-fat dressing would be a better option. Not to mention that the vast majority of fat-free dressings taste horrible.

36. I know that drives me crazy. We have to watch both fat and
sugars/carbs because hubby has diabetes and heart issues. Here's what I do now: I buy both a low fat version and a lower carb version (with the higher fat). If our meal is very low-fat, I give him the higher fat dressing with lower carbs. If the meal is higher fat/lower carbs, I give him the other one.

4. A fitness trainer gave me this tip...
...I told her I craved salty snacks more often than any other kind. She said "Keep a jar of dill pickles in the fridge." She was right. I'd crave potato chips or something similar and would have a couple of ice-cold Vlasic kosher dill spears and no more craving.

Air-popped popcorn and pretzels are other good alternatives.

12. I never seem to get tired of popcorn
It's the old standby, and since it keeps forever (I guess) I always have it on hand. It's very high in fiber and it fills you up with not a lot of calories (assuming you buy the lower calorie stuff).

Other thinks I like to keep on hand:

A good variety of dried fruits (for yogurt and oatmeal)
Almonds
Raw carrots and celery
Pretzels
Triscuit crackers
Sardines (Brisling)
Pumpkin seeds
Yogurt
Edamame (buy frozen and roast in the oven)
Beef jerky
Corn chips and salsa
Apple slices

17. Popcorn is one of my favorites, too.
I have a microwave popper, which doesn't require oil. I use the spray margarine to get the salt to stick. There are a lot of different flavored pop corn seasonings on the market, giving you lots of variety. Or, one can make their own with garlic powder or whatever. However, the problem with some of those seasonings is the sodium--if you are not careful about the amounts you use.

I really like that combo. A sprinkle of dill weed on the cottage cheese makes it even better!

Oh, and Trader Joe's has the best no-fat cottage cheese. Just delicious and wonderful.

15. Believe it or not, Fritos are fairly benevolent. Stay the FUCK away from Bugles.
The latter was my favorite as a child, but they're nutritional disasters. Tortilla chips and salsa are always a good option.

18. You aren't kidding.
Not only are they nutritional disasters, they're addictive. I would eat the entire bag in a sitting if it were put in front of me, so I just don't buy them. And sadly, single serve bags are hard to come by, if they exist at all. So, not even a chance for a fix.

I like soy crisps, like the ones GenSoy makes. Full Circle (the house "organic" brand of Bi-Lo and other grocery chains) makes them, too. They're like rice cakes, only they don't taste like styrofoam. They also have a decent amount of protein in them. They're reasonably low in calories, too, so eating the whole bag would do far less damage than eating a comparable bag of chips. GenSoy makes both savory and sweet versions. I think they might even be gluten-free, for those who have that issue.

And, they DO have some decent rice cakes out now. I love the Sweet Thai Chili rice cakes Quaker makes.

23. bean dip, made with canned refried beans.
many ways to do it , of course, I like to get the fat-free ones and add real organic butter, the ones that just are beans + water + salt in them. Add Sirachi (sp?) sauce and vinegar and cayenne pepper and a little sugar or worchester sauce or something like that. Juanita's tortilla chips are my favorite to have with this and they are cheaper than average, around here at least.

Keep avocadoes around frequently, I like to just open them up and eat them with a spoon as a nice in-between meal snack, with tabasco mixed in.

Toasted sunflower seeds YUMMMMMMMMM! (raw ones are good, too.)

Dired Cherries.

Dried Apricots.

Nothing wrong with raisins and prunes ... as a matter of fact, I wish I had some prunes, I forgot how good those taste when you have a sweet-tooth attack.

SOME kinds of yogurt...

Wait, skip the malted milk balls .... there's probably a healthy version of those out there, somewhere, though!

For food-food, mung beans are an amazingly tasty easy thing to cook, various ways to flavor those, too, but like to just have them with butter.

Canned kidney beans to have with salad....

more later maybe.

Edited on Fri Nov-25-11 11:32 PM by Kali
to make a slightly more work version that trades fried chips for cheese, bake corn tortillas with just a sprinkle of grated cheese until crisp and eat with salsa

also good with beans, you can mash beans without frying in fat to keep them pretty dang healthy but with a good "dipping" consistancy

popcorn can be healthy but not with the amount of butter I put on it

I pop in a pan the old fashioned way with a little oil because the texture is better and wastes less kernels, I don't care for air popped - comes out like dry styrofoam. A good compromise is a microwave popper. The texture is pretty good, no oil, but it does wast a lot of kernals. you can feed them to the birds though.

26. A medium sweet potato baked and mashed with a baked banana
I love sweet stuff, and sweet potatoes and bananas. It's around 300 calories and very filling, and one of my favorite snacks when I'm dieting. If i have it for dinner, I add an ounce of walnuts, which still makes it less than 500 calories, and it's more satisfying than many dinners I eat when dieting.

31. AKA "Cracklins" or "Chicharones"
If you have a Latino grocery, they may have them. If you do have a local bodega, look for "Pasta para Duros", too. They look like puffy wagon wheels and I think they're wheat. They're tasty in the chili lime flavour.

About 5 grams of fat per serving, about as much as potato chips.

37. Grapes or apple slices, whole grain crackers, a few pieces of
cheese. Get fiber, protein, whole grains, dairy, fruit. Like a mini-meal, with a variety of textures
from the juicy fruit to the crispy crackers to the creamy cheese. Seems to satisfy me well without
taking huge portions of anything.

38. Roasted Garbanzo beans and Banana Ice Cream
Edited on Sat Nov-26-11 12:26 PM by The empressof all
Drain a can and dry them with a paper towel. Give them a brief spray of Olive oil and a generous sprinkle of your favorite spice blend. Then roast in the oven till they are brown and crispy.

Kale chips are kind of addictive as well. Take kale leaves and roast them in the oven until they are crispy.

For Banana Ice Cream just blend up a frozen Banana with some stevia. If you like you can even add a small spoonful of peanut or almond butter. Add just a splash of soy or almond milk and blend.
