Call me dumb please
I don't know a nitwit as dysfunctional as your truly. After purchasing my first PC some 12 years ago, my family told me not to be afraid of it and that I couldn't really foul things up so badly they couldn't be fixed. Not so. When I began to see program files that sounded odd, as if they might be spyware or malware, then I would delete them. Later, I would discover programs failed to work anymore.

The only person I can recall that was as dysfunctional as I was, was a co-worker named Bobby. Bobby would buy a new pickup occasionally and simply put gasoline in it. He didn't understand oil changes, maintenance, fluid levels and such. So, when the truck was about a year and a half old and began to develop some serious problems, he would see if the local dealership would give him anything at all for it and buy a brand new one.

Although my laptop PC provides me the ease of online banking and online forums for chat, I have tried to legally download music for some 5 years. I knew a few musicians who were adamant on my use of legal downloads, which I agreed with. First, I downloaded Yahoo Music Jukebox files for my MP3 player. Then they decided to scrap Yahoo Jukebox and although I copied them to a disc, they won't transfer to my newer MP3 player. Then, I went with RealOne and bought some 100 songs from them. Somewhere along the line, I accidentally deleted my entire MP3's music files from the player, RealOne changed formats and now I can't get them to play anymore without updating to a subscription. Now, I'm using Amazon downloading the same songs I purchased from Yahoo and RealOne. Somehow, I've managed to have them sent to My Documents instead of My Music or Windows Media and I can't even get them downloaded to the MP3 player yet.

Twice this week, I have prepared morning coffee only to add 2 teaspoons of coffee to my mug instead of sugar. It's such a crime to get old. I'd willingly submit to a nursing home, but you have to wait until you can no longer dress or feed yourself and I can do both of those for the time being.

I started to post this on GD because I've seldom posted there without being called a moron by someone who disagreed with me. This time, I'm inviting everyone to call me moron, dumbass or whatever. Please do because I can't disagree in the slightest. Nor am I inclined to take exception.

1. Dumbass...
Is something I cannot call you.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to things. My friend, Michelle, says that she's an idiot because she can't do basic operations on the computer. This woman, however, can decorate cakes like no one's business.

I try to explain to her that no one knows everything. It's OK to not know, as long as you try and learn from your mistakes.

 It's all good. :)

4. I won't call you dumb. You know things I never will, and vice versa. Different data. All are equal.
:hi:

And I find that people that call others names when they haven't walked a mile in their shoes, are really projecting, you know?

They are dumb about you. You are not dumb. The word's overused.

Peace Out.

5. I never even moved in to digital music yet. This thread explains my fear of ....
... falling into that deep dark abyss from which it looks like there is no return. It is such a PITA, You have to have the right player, the right format, the right subscription to go with the right player -- (?) -- and all I knew was I didn't want to 'buy' something that only exists in digital format, and then have to back it up all the time just to keep it. I can swallow that with pictures, but that's enough for me. I'm not really computer-phobic other than that, and have managed to resurrect my computer from a complete and total crash without even knowing how I did it, without even having the right -reinstall- disks or whatever they are. Of course, it took me about a week of messing with it for four to five hours a night, but you see I had nothing to lose anyway.

We are all dysfunctional in our own ways, some of us in more adorable ways than others....

I think someone who likes to delete programs off his computer that have ugly names is the most adorable sort of dysfunctional person there is.

Hah hah, well if you get it down give us the step-by-step How To Do It RIGHT.

I did pretty good with cassettes. Pirated free music to people all the time, but it was stuff they never would have listened to had I not given it to them.

7. Thanks, Astral
If I ever become more adept at using music files and downloads of mp3 files, I will share it with you. You're very kind.

8. I actually do think it does depend on age, but not because you're losing it.
I can do most things I need to do on my computer because I've been shown, but if something really goes wrong, I'm completely stuck. Fortunately, I do know those who actually understand computers.

I used a computer for my job, but it didn't come naturally to me, I had to be shown anything new first, at least once, until I learned.

The issue with me is that I just missed being the computer generation. When I was in college, we did have a computer, but it was in the library and the only person I knew who used it was one of my roommates who was a math major. She babysat the computer on the weekends. I've found that co-workers who are just a bit younger than I am can figure out most things intuitively. But they grew up with computers.

So you're not dumb and neither am I. We were both just born slightly too early... :hi:
