Ever see ZZ Top perform Jesus Just Left Chicago in Chicago?
Seen them at the Auditorium theater in the early 1970's. Best concert I have ever been to in my entire life. Great band and the perfect venue for them. They were doing their Tres Hombres tour. You could tell they were on their game that night and were happy about playing such a classy place as the Auditorium Theater. There was electricity in the air that night.

The Auditorium was designed for the best sound quality that could be produced and with perfect sight lines so there is literally not a bad seat in the house. No matter where you sat it felt like you were just a few feet from the stage. That good. This is where the Joffrey Ballet performs to this day. No more rock concerts.

I remember the night well. Like it was yesterday. The Auditorium was and is a classy place. Carpeted. Cloth seats. Designated seating. No smoking way back then. But everyone started smoking pot during the show as soon as the lights dimmed. Even the pimply faced Andy Frain ushers who were at the beginning trying to discourage it were toking up before the night was out. They just joined the party.

We came out of the place after the show ended and seen a huge line wrapping around the building for blocks. We asked what was going on and someone told us that ZZ Top had added a second show at the last minute. So we got back in line and bought tickets and went to the second show too. Lot of people did. That is how good it was.

Little history of the Auditorium Theater:

AUDITORIUM HISTORY

Though the Auditorium opened to immense critical acclaim, what began as a masterfully-designed opera house that sprang from the minds of geniuses gradually fell into disrepair. For decades the Auditorium Theatre continued its decline before experiencing an astounding resurgence in the 1960’s, and ultimately returning to its former status as a jewel in American history.

For nearly 120 years, the Auditorium Theatre has evolved, each decade ushering in a new challenge, and a new voice. From the operatic glory of our inception to the rock-and-roll concerts of the 1960’s and 70’s, from a setting for the world’s most legendary musicals to the greatest ballets, the Auditorium Theatre has adapted and grown, but we have always remained dedicated to providing the highest quality of artistic experiences while preserving the storied principles upon which we were founded.

As time has progressed we’ve continued to provide an eclectic and inspiring assortment of artistic productions. Simply sitting beneath the conical dome and contemplating the breadth of talent to grace the theatre is astounding. Former Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley gave speeches where, years later, incandescent musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Aretha Franklin, and Elton John performed. Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles captivated audiences in the same space where Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera once played to sold-out crowds. Whether Frank Sinatra or Itzhak Perlman, The Beach Boys or Booker T. Washington, we are proud of all those who have graced our stage, but we are always focused on improving and enhancing the quality of our lineup—for a Landmark Theatre in one of the world’s greatest cities, nothing else will suffice.

1. Saw 'em do that in Costa Mesa, CA
It was really awesome as I recall, though in retrospect, I wish I hadn't gotten quite so loaded.
