The roaring 20s were probably the most debauched decade of the last century in American culture. The Great Gastby(Fitzgerald) and The Sun Also Rises(Hemingway) were scandalous upon their publication...American culture had never seen a character like Lady Brett: she has sex with three different men in the book, enjoys herself and most-importantly nothing bad happens as a result. It destroyed the convention that sexually-liberated women must be punished and tragic characters. Jay Gatsby's lifestyle and that of his peers was the subject of outrage. It was a decade of intense cultural and sexual awakening...then the Depression happened and as often happens in downturn, people doubled-down on the embrace of traditional morality and repressed the culture-vanguard of the previous era...just as the 1970s/80s followed the 1960s and the current downturn is emboldening the RW to try to roll back sexual freedoms today.
