One of my saddest experiences in apartment living was when I got my first one at 18 yrs. old while we made minimum wage; working ourselves through college. My roommate & I were so poor, the only thing we had in the refrigerator for the entire first week was a box of pastries from the housewarming committee. We treasured it & tried to make it last as long as possible. We had one chair (I loved lying on the floor, anyway, so that wasn't so bad...until we had company!). We had our own beds & bedrooms, though.
