3. Harlem Nocturne
Heard it once in a teen club that was little more then an old barn with a cement floor. The notes haunted there way up through the rafters.

but I can't find a video. The best cover of Monk's classic, bar none. I miss him.

So instead, I'll post the Big Dog playing the blues

21. I had the best experience with that song the first time I ever heard it.

Let me weave you a tail from years gone by...

Once upon a time, I was working the NY State Renaissance fair with two partners as professional jugglers (that's a whole other story) back in the early '80's. One weekend, one of my partners, lost the keys for his car and we had to take a "crew" bus back to the city.

It let us off in midtown about 11 pm. My other partner and I decided to walk down to Penn, since it was only a about 10 blocks away, instead of taking the subway.

Some where around around 41st street, we hear music playing. So we decide to find out where it's coming from. We turn down a completely deserted block and hear the strains of "harlem nocturne" echoing out against the buildings. It was enchanting. As we get closer to the player, I see it's an old black man with a snow white beard belting out the tune while sitting up against a building.

We didn't have much dough in our pockets (since we performed at the fair for change and not salary), but I gave him what I could and asked him the name of the song.

Then a really neat thing happened, he said, and I quote, "you are on a quest, find the name out for yourself and start your musical education". He smiled, thanked us for the money and continued to play the song.

I was on a mission. And yes, it began a wonderful musical education :)

27. THAT gave me a smile, goosebumps, and a reminiscent watering of the eyes.
Thank you for sharing that. Marvelous story.

Many doorways from one life experience to the next, most of us, I think, have many strangers to thank who appeared at just the right, brief, time.

14. Totally!
Good tune in its own right, but that sax wailing makes it perfect.
I have cuts of it on about 3 albums I made, plus keep one just on the desktop, for easy reach.

34. Okay, I'll admit it "I Want a New Drug" by Huey Lewis and the News
This came out when I was in high school. I just happened to be in the band and played alto sax along a few other guys. We we absolutely obsessed with trying to play it by ear. Our band conductor was a little frustrated with us because we put in time trying to figure out the sax break in that song.
