7. Eubie Blake

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eubie_Blake

As a kid, I heard him on Johnny Carson one time and couldn't believe what I was hearing.

The long long fingers. The smile. The wonderful melodies.

The spirit.

And I have loved the guy's work ever since.

A sample here....

78. I have a couple of LP's
but don't have my turntable hooked up. For some reason, digital versions don't quite seem to capture the full array of his subtle nuances for me. One time (a long time ago...) I was in one of those old-timey, decades old, used book stores (you know, the kind with worn out hardwood flooring and the smell that only old used book stores have.) And there was a classical piano piece that started to play and I immediately felt really, really relaxed and just knew that it was Horowitz playing...sure 'nuff - it was!

Something special about his playing, that's for sure! Glad to find another fan of his :-)

84. I am a bad audiophile
I haven't had my turntable set up in years. I'm all digital. Don't even play CDs any more having ripped my collection to mp3 years ago. Of course I ripped at 320kbps and for albums I really care about I used flac which is lossless. Of course, real audiophiles already consider CDs to be lossy so... Then again, I seem to do most of my listening in the car which isn't exactly an environment conducive to music appreciation.

Chick Corea, I listened to and watched him rehearse in Seattle, he didn't know I was there, he later signed my Return To Forever Poster from 1972.

George Winston, awesome contemporary composer, sat right in front of him in a performance in Sedona, he was amazing.

38. There was a boy.... Nat King Cole
http://youtu.be/Iq0XJCJ1Srw

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise
Was he

And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

(instrumental interlude)

"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

Amen ;)

65. My all-time favorite: Billy Joel!!!
Billy Joel"*RARE* Piano Man (1973)"
"A Rare Promo Video For Billy's Piano Man Song"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou0Tk_Bl3Bs&feature=related

Billy Joel"Rare from 1975."
"Liberty wasn't in his band yet! And he had a mustache!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-CQk2U0LAE

Lyrics;
"It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin

He says ""Son can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes,
but it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it
complete when I wore a younger man's clothes.""

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
he gets me my drinks for free
and he's a quick with a joke
or to light up your smoke
but there's someplace that he'd rather be

He says ""Bill, I believe this is killing me,""
as the smile ran away from his face
""well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
if I could get out of this place.""

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davey who's still in the Navy
and probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
as the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
but it's better than drinking alone

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you've got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say ""Man, what are you doing here?""

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you've got us feeling alright"

From Wiki;"Joel had Top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; achieving 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote himself."

66. OK!!! He started playing the piano at the age of 3...
From wiki; "John started playing the piano at the age of 3, and within a year, his mother heard him picking out Winifred Atwell's "The Skater's Waltz" by ear. After performing at parties and family gatherings, at the age of 7 he took up formal piano lessons. He showed musical aptitude at school, including the ability to compose melodies, and gained some notoriety by playing like Jerry Lee Lewis at school functions."
"At the age of 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. According to one of his instructors, John promptly played back, like a "gramophone record", a four-page piece by Handel that he heard for the first time."

75. The only piano men I know were piano movers. They cost around $1000. They pulled up to our house,
layed a ramp on our stairs, picked up the stand up piano and rolled it out to the truck. Took them 2 minutes tops. And yes they were all huge guys.
