Artist question

Does any one familiar with an artist named Peter Philippi.

My wife and I found what I think is one of his painting (dated 1902) but don't know if it's worth trying to get it appraised or just go to the local antique dealer and see what I can get for it.

We also found some old records that probably date to the 50's. They were stored in a series of photo album type albums so they don't have original sleeves. I think they're all singles since they have an A and B side with one song only but are too big to be the 45's I remember.

Tried asking in the Artists group but thought I might do the same here.

I've been tempted so I can find out how much hubby's great grandfather's pieces are worth, especially now that we have one of them hanging in the living room. I don't know how much it costs to join, though. You can apparently join for a month, but be sure to cancel your membership before they bill for the automatic renewal.

2. I joined Artnet but

figuring this is pretty much a one time deal, didn't think it worth to pay anything.

If the painting is real, it might be worth something.

The records, I'm not sure since they don't have the jackets.

3. How do you join without paying?

I'd love to look up Willbur A. Reaser's paintings. The piece we have is pastels, not oil. A fairly large street scene, probably of Venice, Italy - at least someplace Mediterranean looking. The main problem is that although it is known in the family that is who did this piece, there is no visible signature and we really don't have a provenance, just word of mouth.

5. I would find a reputable art dealer

not an antique store where they really might know what they are doing.

Sometimes people know dishes, but not artwork.


Call a museum, call a university, or look on line for somebody that deals in things that really do have value, not sofa art.


same for the records. music historians, etc.

Sometimes the library is a better source as well, Not everything is on line. We sometimes forget that, though.

Never take the first offer, and always get a second opinion. If either really have value, you don't want to get screwed.
