Ok is this the weirdest request that anyone could ever have in regards to their pets
Thankfully both of my cats are very very healthy.

But when they do pass on over the rainbow - I want to keep their tails and have them stuffed so I have a part of them I can keep forever.

I doubt it can be done and probably won't do it but if I could I'd want to.

1. That's not that weird.
When I had one of my hips replaced, I asked for the bone that they took out.

13. They did give it to me.
It was in a jar and sliced in half. They sent it to pathology first. My surgeon thought it was weird, but he still did it.

27. Sure they will
I got to keep my 2nd child's placenta. I know, don't ask, long story. Funniest part was we left so quickly after the birth (12 hours) that I forgot the placenta and had to send now-ex-h back to go get it. He was so humiliated to go back and say, "Um, we forgot our placenta."

as a reminder of all the wonderful years I had with those lovable furballs.

9. tails don't really need stuffing
but you might talk to a local taxidermist as to best treatments for preserving the fur
dermestid beetles and moths tend to get into untreated leather/fur

you can dry tails by keeping them in the freezer wrapped in newspaper if your climate doesn't allow for air drying

my sister had a cat that got its tail slammed in a door and had to be amputated. she kept the tail in the freezer and still had the live cat

signed,
you don't even want to know what is in my freezer
:P

15. There's a word for what you want, and that word is ...
... taxidermy. While not that common a request, there are professionals who specialize in this art.

16. it's entirely doable
and easy. Have your vet cut off the tails, then contact one of the new places that freeze dries pet remains. Tails won't be that expensive.

And no, it's not weird.

18. I don't know what I feel about this -- part of me says "eewww"...
.
.
.
... and the part of me that still cries sometimes because I
miss NoName so much (lost her about two years ago) thinks
this would've been something to consider had I thought of
it. The opportunity to snuggle with "her" again just seems
wonderful -- even in this form.
.
I don't think this taxidermist's website is still up (she was
getting fucking DEATH THREATS once she got national
publicity) -- but she might be "findable".

20. you need to get out more
thats not even most of the way to really odd.

As to the practical issue of the tails, I've never worked with cat tail. But other animal tails, I was told you don't even have to stuff. They are basically tendon and bone, no muscle to spoil. (Can you tell they considered themselves a small town where I went to high school? I stuffed a fox in class)

Anyway, I can beat you on that. My FIL stated that when he passes he wants himself skinned and the skin framed so as to display his tattoo work, which will be our inheritance, a wonderful display piece. Cat tails as momento's are not even in my realm of "weird".

A friend of mine in the Army had been raised in a mortuary (the
family business). He said the weirdest request they ever got was
from a VERY wealthy old man who wanted to be preserved sitting
in a chair encased in Lucite -- and one of the conditions of his
will would be whoever inherited his mansion would be required to
display him in the entranceway -- "greeting" all visitors as they
arrived.
.
My friend said it would have been illegal (in Washington state at
the time -- late 60's/early 70's).

24. well hot damn
Maybe he is worth something afterall!!

"Indeed, though everyone denies it, there are persistent rumours of a trade in these tattooed skins among Japanese collectors. People are said to have willed their backs for money, and the author D.M. Thomas claims that a particularly glorious specimen sold a few years ago for $US50,000."

Then Again, Ive seen most of his fully body work..

25. That's what I'm doing.
We're going to become part of a concrete block in one of those "eternal reefs". That way, we can watch the fishies swim together for all eternity, or until the Earth and the seas die out.

26. a friend of mine had her first beloved dog stuffed... and it's freaky
even she says so. They keep a big cowboy hat on him so they don't have to see the eyes.

But the tails? Are you gonna hang them off a hat? (I kid...)

I do understand though - two of my beloved kitties have died in the last three years -- and I have some of their fur from when I brushed them, one whose tooth I found, etc. Scraps. But I don't think I could ask someone to cut their tails off, even post mortem.
