Breastfeeding in Public; Why People are Opposed to it.

Duh, because it reminds them that we're just primates. Hyper-smart primates, but primates.

Now think about the sort of people who are actually opposed to it. Reflect upon your feelings if you are opposed to it yourself.

Am I wrong?

1. You may be partially right...
I tend to believe it's more connected to sex. Breasts are considered by many if not most to be associated with erotic feelings as much as they are with the mechanics of nurturing our young. As a whole, our society has an incredibly repressive outlook when it comes to anything connected with sex. IOW, I believe that at least some who object to breastfeeding in public see it as dirty (in the pornographic sense).

5. Pornography is to blame for that though...
if lactation is sexualized, how much credit for that goes to the existence of porno-titles like Lactating Swingers, Milk Fetish or Milkmaids? All it takes to sexualize anything is to make it the focal theme of a porno film...I shit you not, anything you can think of or any task that can be done at the same time as an overt sexual act or performed in bondage-gear...will be the focal-subject of a porn film someday or already is. At that point, someone will think of it as dirty.

Such themes include not only lactation but also:

eating, sleeping, housework, logging, fruit, children's toys, crushing small mammals, prison, beauty salons, haircuts, head shaving, toenail-clipping, laundry, firetrucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, kites, observation by pets (I shit you not, there is a genre of porn dedicated to having sex while being watched by animals.), sports, dodgeball, fencing, bananas, pudding, mashed potatoes, wrestling, all manners of bodily fruids, do I need to continue? Whatever task your doing now or object you're interacting with...could be the theme of a porn film.

I think I'm going to lock myself alone in a sensory deprivation chamber...no, wait there's porn about that too. I'm hardly anti-porn...but we've reached the point of absurdity on the sexualization of culture.

9. Rule 34 of the internet.
If it exists, there is porn of it.

"...I shit you not..."

You don't. But if you did, there is a market for it and websites already devoted to it.

2. back in the 60's growing up, breast feeding just was. i was talking to my father
who was raised in 40's and we agreed, in the past i would run up to a mom and she would be breastfeeding. i would watch, in awe, and no big deal and inevitably ask her what i needed to ask her. it was discreet i guess, but wasn't hidden either. it was natural. not a thought in the world.

fast forward to now. the outrage.

i see it more like we have walked away from the nature of the breast, sexualized it to the point where the only validity of seeing the breast is the means of entertaining men. so when it is outside that context, it cannot be processed.

3. A rabidly RW neighbor,
hates his more progressive DIL, who has recently given birth to his first grandchild. He claims the child is being starved to death because DIL is breastfeeding. I think both the points made above apply to this Neanderthal. (Or it could be simply that he despises his DIL, and nothing she could do would be okay with him.)

The guy is a complete idiot. Breast milk is the best thing for a baby.

:wow:

ETA: He was probably breast fed by his mother. He is one more of the "I got mine, fuck everyone else" crowd.

7. Because Republicans haven't found a way to make money from it.
But mainly, because they're threatened by boobies and want to control them. Avast ye, booby! Garr!

12. Oh...but Rick Perry has!
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 04:58 PM by Chan790
Found a way to profit of it. One of the porn series listed in my post..."Milkmaids". He's a part owner of the distributor, Movie Gallery.

Yeah, "Christian" Ricky's an investor in pornography industry companies. I guess that makes sense, I mean Jesus was friends with the prostitutes...it makes sense that his most-faith-filled adherents would likewise befriend sex-workers.

No, that can't be.

Do not disrupt my beautiful mind with these thoughts again.

11. That's one reason why (some) men hate women.
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 04:21 PM by Manifestor_of_Light
Women breastfeed; they get pregnant; they menstruate; they have babies.
All those remind us that we are mammals and are made just the same as all other mammals.
We have the same nerves, bones, muscles and organs as all other mammals.

All the way down to rats. And men don't like being reminded that we are mammals.

They use our biological processes as an excuse to discriminate against us.

13. I'm opposed to it myself
So I let my wife do it.

But I never really had the nipples for it anyway.

That's just me, though.

...other than to say that civilization has come a long way from the days when women had no choice.
