If you could spare a moment to send a vibe to my cousin Patti...
She is 43 years old. She has 4 children. 4 years ago she was diagnosed with uterine/cervical cancer. She underwent surgery and radiation. She survived and is cancer free. But the damage the radiation did to her intestines and bowel was horrific. She went into the hospital with a kidney infection a year ago...and has been in and out of the hospital/nursing homes ever since.

Her husband died two years ago. Along with my aunt and uncle (in their 70's) she is all her children have. Did I tell you how incredibly strong my cousin is? About a month ago, we were told, basically that it was over. TPN was not working to give Patti the nutrients she needed to survive and build her strength back up. She was sent home. 3 days later she was rushed to the ER and, as near as we can tell (her sister is a nurse) they overdid it with the fluids. They initially diagnosed a brain bleed that they could do nothing about. Patti became incoherent and confused. A priest was called in for last rights and my cousin, even unable to form a sentence, hid from him. Patti was not ready to die. Even though her once 250 pound frame only carried 70 pounds. She was placed into hospice care...and she got better. She can speak, she knows us...somehow she is still alive.

Now, here's the part where hope comes in. Her sister was able to get her into an intestinal rehabilitation center in Omaha. She gave them the story, not sugar coating just how bad the situation is at this point...and they are GOING TO TAKE HER!! :) They were stunned that she was put into hospice (I have had a hard time dealing with that myself) and agreed to take on her case, they believe they can help her. She is going to be lifeflighted out, hopefully, tomorrow.

So if you could spare a thought or a healthy healing (nutrition packed) vibe for my cousin, and her children, I would appreciate it so much.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. For the first time in what seems like forever I really think she can do this.

4. It does look hopeful, SM!
Poor Patti & all that she's been through. I can't help wondering if she was thinking of her 4 children when that priest came in. Mothers tend to be afraid of dying & leaving their children before they've grown up.

Your sister, her children, & your aunt & uncle will be in my prayers.

If there's one thing I've learned in my ordeal is NOT to just
have blind faith in medical opinions -- sometimes I had to
PUSH to get the things that ultimately were good for me.

8. ***Thank you so much everyone ***

She is a fighter, literally the strongest woman I have ever met. She has never talked about anything other than getting better, even when the doctors were giving up. She was signed out of hospice care so her insurance will cover a good bit of it. We were worried there would be a problem. But it really seems as if everything is falling together.

22. ***Update***
Sadly, Patti took a turn for the worse and her blood pressure dropped. She was admitted to the local hospital and they have said that she wouldn't make the trip alive. I am sitting here helpless. One, thinking that it's so much physician's pride in the way and Two, she is dying anyway... why not take one last shot?

My heart is breaking.
