Yes, I know soccer teams have to sell advertising on their uniforms to pay the bills--soccer stadiums are not very large, not as many people follow soccer in the US as follow other sports, etc. etc. etc.

There is NO justification for NFL teams to sell advertising on their uniforms, but this season the Seahawks are sporting "Bing" patches on their jerseys. This is an atrocity. Hopefully they're the only ones doing this; the Panthers, who are about as useless as the Seahawks, are not yet selling ads on their uniforms.

1. In the near future...
(say, by the last day of Axolotl, next year) there will be advertising on everything. I foresaw the collapse of civilization some years ago when they started putting ads on bathroom stalls. I fully expect to see ads on the sides of airplanes and private automobiles, shaved into dogs' and cats' fur and tattooed on people's foreheads.

2. You apparently missed the flying billboards.

Western Pacific Airlines (now defunct)

Southwest Airlines also has one or two Sea World flying billboards as well as the now-removed swimsuit model and Alaska has a couple for Disney and those are just the planes painted at the place I work.

3. I think it's a great idea.
Then again I'm in the industry sorta so maybe my opinion is a little biased.

4. It's just flat out greed.
There is no way an NFL franchise should need to do this. The TV money and merch sales alone more than cover the player's salaries. And that's before you get to the game tickets themselves, parking, the concessions and the beer. Even in the few cities where no one shows up, the team makes money. Sharing the money is the key to the NFL's success. They shouldn't need to look like NASCAR drivers and soccer players. It's bush league.

8. I thought this was going to be a rant about calling the sport played at the World Cup
by its proper name. :P

9. The "sport" played at the World Cup is not an actual sport
Twenty guys run down the field kicking a ball. When they get to the end, they kick it to this guy in a net who catches it and throws it back, butts it back with his head, or otherwise prevents the ball from going in the net. (If it DOES go in the net, someone will shoot the goaltender when he's walking to his car after the game is over.)

This is not a sport. It's what you make your kid do so he'll go to sleep tonight. That people will pay to watch it is immaterial; 4500 people have paid my newspaper to be allowed to watch Jon Ashton cook at the old dog track on the state line, and that's not a sport either.
