You know all those Storage locker shows

You know the ones, where they auction off unpaid storage lockers and then show all the treasures (and trash) found therein.

I keep wondering: how do they come to be abandoned, especially those with valuables in them? Someone forgets to pay? Dies? Goes to jail? Shouldn't the contents belong to their families?

And what happens if someone who lost their locker sees the show, showing all their valuable stuff? I wonder what they would do? Would they try to get it back, or ?
