I've Heard That Portland, Ore. Is The Best City For...
Starting life over, esp. if you want to escape your past. No one bothers you nor goes meddling in your personal affairs.

Is that true?

2. It's just a cty.
Portland is a nice city, with beautiful parks and a great culture, and has a large liberal element, but in the end it's a city like any other. Some people are good, some are bad, and most just couldn't care less. It has its hip urban areas, slums, and suburbs. It has tree hugging stoners, and bible thumping fundies. It has rich and poor.

Like anywhere else in America, there are LOTS of people who will bother you and meddle in your personal affairs though. Like anywhere else, you just have to learn to avoid them.

5. Powell's Books.
I worked 87-92 in American Bank Building on Pioneer Square.

I like Portland.

There are more anonymous towns in OR, WA, or N CA that are reasonably near ocean and nice cities.

6. Expensive. Great food. Weather sucks. Too many hipsters. No parking.
People aren't any more or less nosy than any other big west coast city.

In all seriousness though, I've heard that Portland is really the most amazing place. I know I want to go there.

8. "It's a place where young people go to retire" - heh
There definitely is that subculture there (or as posted upthread, too many hipsters). And whomever came up with the trend (which fortunately seems to have run its course) of fine dining=communal benches with strangers needs to be shot.

But overall, it's a nice enough place. And apparently, the 24-Hour Church of Elvis is back in business, which makes my day a little brighter. And wow, its website is totally insane, which will come as no surprise to anyone who has met the proprietor.
