Don't judge me! A cooking and math question :-)
I was making quiche tonight and the recipe called for 1.5 cups of cheese.

I looked at the 8 oz block of cheese I had bought and thought "oh no, I did not buy enough" and also thought "wow that's a lot of cheese in that recipe."

I started grating the cheese and imagine my surprise when only 1/2 of the block of cheese filled up 1.5 cups. I know there was air in the cup but the recipe did not say to pack the cheese which would defeat the purpose of grating it anyway.

The quiche came out great but I feel I will never know if I made it correctly.

Do you know the answer?

8. Ever read that book?
"Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" Came out in the 1980's

A couple of my faves;

What kind of music do real men listen to? Real men don't listen to Jackson Brown. No real man wants to listen to a millionaire, prima donna crybaby rockstar complain about how tough his life is on the road.

What kind of cars do real men drive? Big, hulking Chryslers with 5 million cubic inches under the hood. After all, how ya gonna out run a cop in a Honda?

2. Yes, it sounds like you followed the recipe.

1 1/2 cups is 1 1/2 cups, whether you grate it at home or they do it for you in a factory.

I don't have any shredded cheese on hand, but I seem to recall that the standard, basic size package is 8 ounces, and I believe there are several cups in there, at least. Checking the label should pretty much tell you, but I believe it will work out about the same as you achieved by shredding your own.

Edited to add --the weight of a cup of shredded cheese may vary with the type of cheese. Some contain a lot more moisture than others, so I believe something very dry, crumbly, and aged like a Parm is going to have a lower moisture content, and therefore weigh less per cup, than something very high in moisture like a very young cheddar or colby.

6. Yes I think my confusion was that I thought that 8 oz = cup always.
But the 8 oz of cheese was the weight of it. Though I have never seen a recipe that says add a 1/2 lb of cheese to something.

Thanks for your help :-)

instead of mixing volume and mass measurements. On the other hand you are talking about cheese and you can't really ever use too much cheese. Or bacon.

7. Funny - the original recipe was Paula Deen's Bacon and Spinach quiche
which called for an entire pound of bacon. When I made it a month ago, I just couldn't go there and reduced it to 1/2 lb of bacon. :-)

10. My mama always told me
A pint's a pound the world around. So 1.5 cups = 0.75 pints = 12 oz.

Right?
