Still though. It's not a new thing. An emerging band has maybe ten years to compile that initial pre-fame album.

Then maybe a year to scramble together a second. And maybe a third two years after that.

It takes a solid talent to be able to pull that off.

Plus not having the stress of fame pull you apart.

5. Velvet Revolver...

...because really, what were they other than G'n'R with Scott Weiland out front instead of Axl?

There are songs on the first album that I still really enjoy, and I have "Sucker Train Blues" on a mix CD that I play often in the car when I need a real adrenaline rush.

Second album kinda sucked, Weiland imploded (again), end of story.

8. The Snoslins

A.K.A. The Nelsons. A little band from Lubbock, TX that won MTV's Basement Tapes contest in 1983. Sweet, funny guys.

The reason I refer to them as The Snoslins is because just after they won the big contest, Ricky Nelsons' sons decided they wanted to be rock stars and proceeded to sue the Lubbock boys for the rights to the band name. The battle lasted a couple of years and while The Nelsons ended up retaining their name, by the time all was said and done their national career was over.

During the troubles, lead singer, Donnie Allison, used to joke "We're the Snoslins!"

Donnie died this last May from cancer.

and I loved Sammy Hagar when he was a solo artist. When I heard Van Halen was picking up Sammy I thought they had invented the perfect band. I like the Van Hager period, just liked the DLR Van Halen period better.

Great debut album...

Two tours, then Holdsworth and Bruford left...

Even adding Terry Bozzio on drums couldn't rekindle the magic.

Their second album had maybe one good tune on it.
