Bad idea or worst idea ever?-
Edited on Sat Sep-03-11 02:23 PM by hedgehog

The idea is to freeze the stone and put them into your drink instead of ice cubes. You won't have to worry about diluting your drink, just bashing your front teeth with rocks!

1. Nifty, but not as efficient as ice cubes, I suspect
Unless the rocks melt and mingle with the ambient liquid.

3. Whiskey stones are made of soapstone.
They don't melt or mingle but they cool well, they "lose" heat from ambient liquids very very efficiently. (I'm sorry, there is a proper physics term for this but I have no blinkering recollection what it is.)

This isn't a new idea...the Irish and the Scottish have been doing it for 12+ centuries. Take dense pebbles that retain cold well, leave them in the river so they get cold, put them in your whiskey so it gets cold and stays strong. It just works a bit better now that we have refrigeration.

Logically, if I knew I wanted cold whiskey, I'd keep it in the fridge.

6. Interesting
Is it because soapstone is porous?

Heck, is it porous?

I guess that would explain it. Good to know!

7. They're very polished...also fairly soft for stone.
I don't think they're even hard enough to chip teeth falling from the length of a old-fashioned glass. I mean I guess they "could" scuff glass but I've never seen it.
