78. I just noticed that you're in SoCal...
...the Love show is in Sierra Madre at a place called Cafe 322 - 322 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. - Sierra Madre, CA 91024.

Here's the link to their music schedule this month: http://www.cafe322.com/vc/index.php

"LOVE Revisited" is Sept. 23. Not surprisingly - they're permanent fixtures in Pasadena/Sierra Madre - Snotty Scotty & The Hankies are on before LOVE.

Cafe 322 is a halfway decent Italian Restaurant which regularly features live music. It's clean, the room is small, it's a great place to see good music with food and drink at reasonable prices (although there is a $10 cover for LOVE, I've never before paid a cover charge to get in).

Before its current owners revamped the place, it was a cop bar for off-duty LAPD cops, and before that, several of my bands would play there when it was a dingy dive bar rock club, called The Sunset, back in the early 90s or thereabouts.

I saw him in concert a few years ago (and yeah I'm gonna brag about it til I die :p) It was during the Bush years but he did not get political at all, which kinda surprised me, but maybe that was just because he was old. Although when I saw Nina Simone she stood up from her piano, with some effort, to yell "get him the f_ck out of there!" That was 2001 I think.. I'm kind of glad she's not lived to see how bad things got, although it's a shame she never knew our country elected a black president!

48. I saw him once many years ago (1980s, I think) on the same tour as Stevie Wonder.
Both were terrific but for totally different reasons. Many in the arena were there for Wonder and had no idea what Heron was about. It was fascinating to watch him win them over.

81. I was glad to come back to this thread and see Gormy Cuss say Gil Scott-Heron.
.
.
.
Credited by many to be "the grandfather of rap and hip-hop" (though he was pretty
strictly a blues poet), I think Scott-Heron is one of the most under-recognized
geniuses of our time (well, MY time anyway... youngsters).
.
CAUTION: FREQUENT USES OF THE N-WORD AND THE MF-WORD
.
.
.
This has always been my absolute FAVORITE piece of his -- one of his shortest...
but the combination of the BEAUTY of the music and the ugliness of his language
and the events he is describing was just outright INSPIRED.
.
