Right after high school graduation, my friends and I took a road trip
We were young, stupid and terrified. Because we were all going to the same college, we thought it would be fun to go visit, walk around, waste a summer day bumming around in that harmless, annoying way kids do.

It was one of those perfect days, where everything fit, everything made sense, everyone was there right there in each moment. We roamed the summer-empty campus, we sat in the grass under the vast arms of the old oak trees, we laughed and talked the Big Talk about Life.

On the way home, Sarah and I sat in the back seat. She lay down and rested her head on my leg. I played with her hair as we drove east, chasing the coming night. We were young, wise and invincible.

I woke up this morning thinking about that trip, about Sarah, and about the strange directions life takes us.
