Aggressive Snake Terrorizes Street

A 1.5m snake terrorised people on a busy city street in Darwin yesterday morning.

The snake reared and tried to bite passers-by as they walked along Smith St at about 1am on Sunday.

The snake - a brown water python - was discovered by a young woman on her way to start her night shift job.

She didn't see the snake poised to strike on the footpath until it jumped up and tried to bite her on the legs.

The woman ran for help, finding off-duty security guard John MacLagan who was using an ATM machine 10m away.

"She told me about the snake and how it had a go at her and I went down and had a look," Mr MacLagan said.

"It was a bloody aggressive snake - jumping up, hissing and snarling.

"I was standing about about 1m away telling people to stay away and and it snapped at me a few times.
