My rule is that I have to have met the person face to face or know them by reputation in my profession.
I've had others ask, but they have turned out to be
1. Kids who want someone to send them points in one of the Facebook games 2. Pathetic guys who think that trolling the Facebook pictures without reading the profiles is a good way to meet women. (Look, man, if you'd read my profile you'd know that I am NOT interested in a guy who poses in front of a Confederate flag or one who is basically illiterate or a guy who says that his main interests are guns and football. Not one has been even remotely suitable.) 3. Scammers 4. Right-wingers who want to argue with me
I turn all of them down.
A friend of mine almost got scammed by a man who asked to be her Facebook friend out of the blue. Fortunately, she got suspicious when he started asking "desperately" for small sums of money, since the "background" he had given her indicated that he should not be hard up for money.
