If I had a laptop, and went to somewhere where there's free wireless access,

would I still have to have an ISP account to get on the Internet?

3. So, how do you connect then? I have a new laptop & a wireless internet connection
at my home. How do I (or can I) connect to another wireless network connection? I am not a computer expert.

4. It will probably prompt you to join the network.
Usually, that's the way it works.

5. when you are in range, turn on your wifi card (if it's not already on)
and it will search for a wifi connection. If it is open (no password) it may just pick it up, depending on your settings. You may have to choose it from the list if it doesn't.

It's different depending on several things, including if it's Mac or Windows. Windows has a network connection deal in the tray, Macs have the Airport one in the toolbar.

6. Above responses are accurate. Plus you may get prompted for some personal information.
Many free sites at colleges and libraries like to get some idea who they're giving access to in case the network is misused.
