what could cause that from a rainbow?

5. was it a digital camera or cellphone?

I'm asking because the image sensors can sometimes create weird diffraction effects depending on the light. Kind of like a lens flare but peculiar to digital cameras.

8. Where was the sun? In front of you, or directly above?

Looks like flare, as the lens is so close to the front on a cellphone camera. Cool effect, but if you don't want it to happen try holding your hand above the lens next time, kind of acts like a lens hood on a DSLR lens.
