But for Murrysville resident Maureen Petru, "awkward" is great.

A childhood photo of her family was the recent grand-prize winner in an online contest at the popular website, Awkward Family Photos.

Maureen and the other Larson kids and their parents, Karen and Harry of Lino Lakes, Minn., were playing in a Fourth of July tennis tournament when someone decided it would be cool to pose for a "patriotic" group shot.

Karen Larson, who loved making goofy Halloween costumes from scratch, went to a fast food restaurant for raw materials. In the early 1980s photo, the grinning family members wear red hats -- actually fried chicken buckets -- decorated with white stars and American flags.

I can think of several pictures that are far more worthy of the title. Hell, even the infamous Thanksgiving letter from Marney is better, and it's not even a photo! Here are a few I would have chosen:

1. I love Awkward Family Photo!
But I agree, the nekkid cat photos are hardly the best. The scary Easter Bunny (no offense, Bunny) pictures are the ones I like showing to my students... they always get the biggest reaction.
