2. sour or black cherries?
I have never in my life experienced fresh sour cherries but I have a friend in Germany who brings me a couple of jars of jam that her mother makes - to DIE for, so delicious

for sweet cherries, I just eat them as fast as I can:9

4. sour cherries are available in the U.S.
But it is very hard to find them fresh. Usually only at a farmers' market for a week or two in the summer. They are available frozen, though, which is almost as good. If you can't find a local source, you can order them on the internet.

5. clafouti
That's a popular way to use them.

I have used them in a triple cherry pie, with canned sour cherries and with rainier cherries or canned Queen Anne cherries.

6. Find cherry tree. Pick cherries. Eat.
The cherry season has pretty much peaked, at least for pie cherries. I have a Northstar tart cherry tree in my yard, and the cherries ripened about 3 weeks ago. I ate some of them off the tree and the birds got the rest. These cherries are really good for pies, preserves and sauces.

Here's what it looked like a few weeks ago:

Heaven.

12. I just planted one of these
this spring along with a Montmorency Cherry Tree. So far so good, but it will some years yet before I get a good crop of cherries.

14. Yes, but it's cumbersome
Take big, black cherries, fresh, crunchy and juicy--LOTS of them.

Get a very sharp knife, cut them in half, separate the pits out, one by one.

Toss them on top of a home-made müssli of oatflakes, wheatgerm and flax seeds.
Pour on milk (whole, skim, whatever). Mix them in, and add dried cranberries
as desired (I desire).

Very healthy, but tastes great in spite of all that.

17. No. I don't bother looking for them.
Fresh cherries never last long enough to make it into a recipe in my house. :-) The same goes for blueberries.

18. long ago my neighbor had a sour cherry tree in her yard
we would sit on her porch swing for hours at a time talking and eating those delicious cherries.

I miss you Viola, Cherries just don't taste the same without you

20. Try this
Great cobbler, and easy to make:

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar, divided
1 tablespoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 cup milk
3 1/2 cups fresh cherries, pitted and halved
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preparation

Melt butter in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish.
Combine flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt; add milk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour batter over butter (do not stir).
Bring remaining 1 cup sugar, cherries, and lemon juice to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly; pour over batter (do not stir). Sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired.
Bake at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve cobbler warm or cool.
