I figured out why George Washington's dad was so pissed off about the cherry
tree...

A few years ago, I had a mild case of the Gout.

They gave me pills but they were taking way too long to work.

If you ever had a bout of gout, you would understand how freakin' painful it is.

I know it's becoming more important now because there is a fat guy in a commercial showing how much extra acid he is dragging around in this really large beaker because of his Gout.

Well, I went to the home remedies book and they said drink some cherry juice.

I drank about a quart of an hour and before the day was through, the gout was gone...

So I guess Mr. Washington had the Gout and George chopped down his medicine cabinet.

1. I have tried to tell people
Edited on Sat Aug-06-11 07:01 AM by astral
that cherries are a commonly known cure for gout but they look at me like I am crazy and why should they believe me and where did I hear such a thing... I figure it's up to them whether to check it out for themselves or shrug me off.

I once told my 'college-educated' relative about how healthy wild dandelion greens were, and she said to me "I didn't know you could eat dandelions."

We seem to be at a moment in our history where everything we ever knew about the plants growing all around us is forgotten, and anyone knowledge any mentions about such things is considered suspect.

Back to cherries: I have also heard they can be good for arthritis sufferers, and although I don't suffer from any aches and pains like that (yet?), it seems alot of other people my age are arthritis sufferers.

As long as it's legal to eat cherries there's no harm in finding out for ourselves.

Unless, of course, you don't like cherries ; )

3. Gus Washington was pretty young when he died and had lived an active life. Gout is unlikely.
You won't truly understand the allegory of that story until you realize that "cherry tree" was Gus Washington's nickname for his penis.

4. what amazes me is the amount of people who would prefer to take a pill
given all the side effects and contraindications when combined with their other meds, why chance it?

why not just eat a few cherries or drink some cherry juice, daily.

7. Cherry juice is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
It's been promoted here in Michigan quite a bit, as a way to boost sales -- Michigan is the sour cherry production center of the US.

Unfortunately, its also NOT cheap.

8. Rotten Johnny and the cherry tree
City boy Rotten Johnny and his farm-boy cousin were walking around on the farm and saw the outhouse at the edge of a 40-foot cliff.

"Let's push it over the hill!" yelled Johnny.

'No, let's not,' his cousin said. 'We use that.'

"Ah, who cares," said Johnny as he pushed it over the cliff.

A couple hours later, Johnny's father called him in. "Johnny, did you push the outhouse over the cliff?"

'No, father.'

"Son, let me tell you a little story about George Washington and the cherry tree. Once upon a time, George Washington cut down the cherry tree. When he was asked if he did it, he said, 'I cannot tell a lie. I did it.' And he didn't get into any trouble at all. So, did you push the outhouse over the cliff?"

'Father, I cannot tell a lie: I did it.'

Johnny's father then proceeded to beat him to within an inch of his life.

"But father, why? You said George Washington didn't get in trouble for cutting down the cherry tree."

'George Washington's father wasn't sitting in that fucking tree when George cut it down.'
