What was the name of Schrödinger's cat????
If it did not have a name, what should have been its name?

This is a semi-serious question....I am trying to name a cat.

5. I always thought that if I got a cat I'd name him Schrödinger. Perfect cat name.
Interesting tidbit: Schrödinger didn't come up with the idea of a not dead/dead cat-in-a-box to more easily describe Hiesenberg's Uncertainty Principle, but to ridicule it.

7. After some discussion re: quantum stuff, we are leaning towards...
a variation on fermi

Furme.

The cat wandered up to our house out of nowhere, is a grey ghost color, totally placid, moved right in, just plonked himself down in the house, and our dog and the "head cat" moved over and accepted him.
Weird.

I keep thinking of him as "Ghost Cat" but today, took him to vet's to get ..."tootered" and they seen to want him to have a name.
He just arrived, out of nowhere. About a year old, very social, calmest most laid back cat I have ever seen.
So I gotta come up with a name.

22. Well, his full name was Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrödinger,
so any of those first 3 would be a good cat name, with a little wink.

If I may make a suggestion, a friend of mine used to talk about her childhood dog named Deogie (pronounced dee-O-gee), and the way she would say his name it took me a while to realize that his name was really D-O-G. Along those same lines, a perfect cat name to me would be Seeatie (c-A-t).

On a side note, I recently went to a B-day party held at a friend's house who had a new "rescued" kitten that none of us knew about until we went inside. We played with the kitten, calling it "kitty". When one of the new owners came in, we asked what the new kitten's name was. She replied simply, "Kitty".

Why confuse it?

I have learned the most interesting things on this thread!

and I think your idea is very clever...Seeatie. Or...Seeatee.
The (sadly) humorous thing about it is that, down here, no one would get it, even at the vet's office.

44. Chuang-tzu
"Once I, Chuang Tzu, dreamed I was a butterfly and was happy as a butterfly. I was conscious that I was quite pleased with myself, but I did not know that I was Tzu. Suddenly I awoke, and there was I, visibly Tzu. I do not know whether it was Tzu dreaming that he was a butterfly or the butterfly dreaming that he was Tzu. Between Tzu and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is called the transformation of things."

55. A friend of mine in HS was a few decades ahead of you. Named him Erwin.
After Erwin Schrödinger.

His story had a bit of a sad ending. The cat was hit by a car, and a neighbor put it into a box and brought him over. He buried it without ever opening the box, theorizing that the cat "might live forever" if he didn't open it to check. He loved that cat.

Only a few people "got" the cats name without explanation though, so it was a bit of an inside joke. If I were going to name a cat after the experiment, I'd probably name it either "Schrödinger", or "Entaglement" (and just call it "Tangle" for short).

56. AFAIK
The cat only existed in a mind experiment.

Kitty name? I've always named my own after TV characters. I figure out their general disposition, and go from there. I almost named my babygirl after MacGyverm, but all she did for the first few days was poke her head into everything, and I ended up naming her Jessica, after Jessica Fletcher because she was always snooping around.

If you are into classic literature, perhaps a character from Shakespeare, or even more relevant, from T.S. Eliot's Cats poems--I believe it's a trilogy, but I could be wrong.

Music? A musician who moves you, a tragic musician, or whoever shares some characteristics.

TV? Lots to choose from.

A friend had a black cat and a grey one. The black one was "Familiar" and the grey one was "Gandalf."

Hope that helps a little!

59. Usually cat names are easy for me, this guy, tho, have not had enough time with him
to get it figured out, then the vet office wanted the blank line filled in.
So, as I said in later thread,
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9745808

he is named...Boson, which makes Mr. Dixie happy.
Except I will call him Bozo until/unless a new name suggests itself.

All HE cares about is hearing "Come and eat!". THAT he understands very well.
And,as of yesterday, he is now sans balls.

The cat's real name was Böhner - pronounced Boyner - but Schrödinger thought it was cute to call him Boozer. The name seemed to fit him. Schrödinger was a fun guy.
