Kids Today: Is there some new trend towards roots music? Americana?

The other day outside the Dublin BART station, there was this band. Guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass and drums. They were playing roots/americana music - pretty well actually. The fiddle player had a pair of dancing clogs, and managed to do mountain dancing (ala Jessie White) when she wasn't playing.

I thought they must be traveling around but no - they're locals. According to them, there's kind of an underground folk movement that really likes to draw from Irish, Scottish, Celtic, West Virginia/Alt.Country stuff.

Is this just a small thing, or is this a trend?

1. I don't know but my 25-year-old niece and her boyfriend are into playing that kind of music.

She's on the fiddle and he's on the guitar.

2. Thank Goddess, it's both.

A small thing and a trend. The kids are discovering they can do this music for themselves, by themselves, with no need to haul a thousand watts of sound system. Setup and teardown times are minimal and the music is infectious.

Total strangers will stop in their tracks and start grooving in spite of what they had set out to do at that moment. The kids have discovered something that is, at the same instant, brand new and hundreds of years old.

4. God I hope so.

I like most kinds of music but I'm getting much pleasure out of roots fusion these days. Some good stuff coming out of it.

my daughter only listens to what I would describe as Alt Folk.

And beards, beards are a big thing, according to her, all the cool musician type guys have a beard.
