Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz said he believes a deal has been reached to make his city the new home of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Rumours have abounded in recent weeks that the struggling Thrashers could land in Winnipeg, where the True North Sports and Entertainment group has been seeking to purchase the team.

On Thursday the Globe and Mail reported that a deal had finally been reached, though the report was quickly denied by all groups involved.

"Do I believe an agreement is there? Absolutely," Katz told CTV News Channel.

if this happens, it could create an interesting "Western Conference Story" matchup between the San Jose Sharks and the new Winnipeg Jets (their former WHA, then NHL team name). :-)

edit: the Jets would also find themselves playing the Calgary Flames -- yup, formerly the Atlanta Flames.

So many different sources confirming and denying it.
My take..Bettman is lying. He's an asshat of the superb variety and a Canada hater so he is trying desperately to stop it from happening.
I believe(read hope) that it is done and he will have some grandiose excuse as to why he did it the way he did.
Bettman needs to leave hockey. Period.
