DU mechanics! Question from sister in law:
Car is making a staccato groaning / grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel to the left or right, moving or stopped still either one. Started suddenly, no warning. Steering is normal, no play. Noise happens only in a 20-30 degree or greater turn, not in a curve. Ideas??

1. Check your power steering fluid
and see your mechanic.

4. Could be the CV Joint
I'm not a mechanic, but I've had that issue come up for me before. It usually makes a noise that sounds a bit like cards in the spokes of a bicycle wheel, but I think it can also have a grind to it.

10. Yup Thats it!
CV's will start with a almost quiet "Clickity-Clack" as the damage gets worse it develops into to a "Thunkity-Thunk". You will notice this more in turns and cornering.

Replace BOTH SIDES (Drivers and Passengers) as soon as possible.

If one can only afford to replace the noisy CV get the other one done as soon as one can...Both sets of CV have the same milage on them.

5. Low on power steering fluid. My guess. If it's a toyota or lexus
I may be able to shed some more light on the problem.

6. Agree with the power steering fluid as a first check.
If the fluid level is fine, then I suspect the pump is going out.

8. Where is the noise coming from?
...under the hood, or near the wheel wells?

9. Power steering fluid-always check the simple fixes first. My MIL's Prius
Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 06:22 AM by old mark
had a brake system alarm that would beep every few minutes-for over a year!.She told us her favorite mechanic thought it was a short and would be expensive to trace and fix.

I fixed it by adding less than an inch of brake fluid to the reservoir.

11. Yep. Power steering fluid. If the level is fine, it may needed to be flushed.
If it isn't that, the pump is probably fucked.
