Damn. Now I want to watch Star Trek IV - Voyage Home again. Although George and Gracie were actually animatronic remote controlled whales, there were some shots of real humpbacks at large in the ocean. The special feature on how they made the robotic whales is really cool.

2. And yet it may be one of the most complicated languages on earth.
They already know that whales develop regional dialogs, not that we know what they mean, but there are "accents" if you will.

3. a beautiful language
Last week at Goodwill I got a 1970 album of humpback whale songs for a buck!! I haven't played it but if it sounds anything like this then it's great.
