Poll question: Should dawg buy a Phish studio album?
Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 10:56 AM by dawg
Occasionally, I like to veg out with my iPod and listen to a good album (or just a *side* if it is a long one). I tend to like complicated songs with lots of guitars and vocals. For headphone listening, I really enjoy bands that use stereo effects and little sonic tricks to maximum benefit. My favorite bands are Yes, Radiohead, the Beatles, Genesis, and R.E.M.. I also love gentler stuff like Nick Drake, but albums like that get boring to me on repeated listens. I've got some iTunes gift cards to spend, so what do you guys think?

1. I still listen to Rift
but I pass on everything else Phish. Might also check Vida Blue.

2. If you like Genesis...

...especially if you like the "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind & Wuthering" albums...you should check out the band Big Big Train, and these two albums:

The Difference Machine

The Underfall Yard

http://www.amazon.com/Underfall-Yard-Big-Train/dp/B002ZIABE0

This is the "complicated songs with lots of guitars and vocals" music you're looking for, but not complicated just for the sake of being clever, complicated in the same way that Genesis is "complicated."

Very melodic. Lots of Steve Hackett-style guitar with touches of the David Gilmour side of Floyd, NOT the Roger Waters side.

The vocalist on "Difference Machine" is Sean Filkins, replaced by David Longdon on "The Underfall Yard"...the difference being that they only sounded MORE like Genesis when Longdon came on board. As a matter of fact, when Phil Collins left Genesis, and Rutherford/Banks recorded the final studio album "Calling All Stations" with vocalist Ray Wilson, Longdon was one of the people who made the final cut auditions for that spot.

I have a mix CD in the car made up of half of each album. I've played this CD more than any other in the last two months.

ON EDIT:

I forgot the best part! On the Big Big Train Website, you can download the entire 23 minute title track from "The Underfall Yard" for free:

Look for the red "Free Download" button on the right. Enjoy!

3. I may have to check those guys out.
When I'm being truthful, Wind & Wuthering is my favorite Genesis album. But it's more popular to say Selling England by the Pound.

4. Check them out for free...see my note above.
This is really, really "Wind & Wuthering" style...and that's my favorite Genesis album too. I saw them at Winterland on the tour that ultimately became the "Seconds Out" double live LP. The set list was identical.
