She Messed Up; Get Over It
Why is the media making such a big deal about the fact that Christina Aguilera messed up while singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl? I have seen a number of stories discussing the fact that Aguilera missed words while singing. That was not the first time someone has messed up while singing the national anthem. I am not talking about the people who should not be able to sing the national anthem, I am talking about the people who have at least decent voices and have messed up while singing the song. I have never seen the media make such a big deal about someone messing up while singing the national anthem.

1. She's a professional singer who probably got paid big bucks
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 11:53 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
for that performance. Considering that, she should have at least got the words right; that's not too much to ask. And she should have just sung the damn thing instead of tarting it all up, ululating like a banshee on crack. It was a poor performance and the criticism was justified. Even so, it's not an earth-shattering event. The half-time show sucked even worse.

3. I was told that the musicians at half-time don't get paid for playing.
They get expenses for themselves and their entourage (travel, etc.) but do not get a fee for their performance. I don't know it it also applies to those who sing the national anthem, but it very well could. Hey, it's a gig with an audience of millions.

10. Whether they're paid at the Super Bowl or not, they make their living singing
Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 08:12 AM by Richardo
It's not too much to ask for them to sing the damn song correctly.

9. + 1000 points for 'ululating'

We would also accept 'caterwauling'. :D

2. How many times have home-team performers botched The Natonal Anthem at the Superbowl?
Ms. Aguilera is, broadly speaking, a Pittsburgh native, so to have her mess up a universally familiar song for her home team at the Superbowl, with hundreds of millions of eyes on her, is a bit weird.

Hell, I don't have much of a singing voice, but at least I can get the words right!

I also doubt that 95% of the people so wounded that Aguilera left out the word "ramparts" even know what the hell "ramparts" are! haha

8. Had she not sung the words "twilight's last reaming," I think it would have blown over by now.
It was such a _good_ screw-up that it's getting a lot of buzz, not unlike a particularly funny headline would get.

12. I don't mind the lyric problem nearly as much as the rest of it.
She butchered the whole song.

Hate it when the intent is to showcase the voice.

Just sing the damn thing like it was written.

Note for note.

18. Thank you! It's supposed to be a group sing
It's pretty hard for people to sing along when the soloist is singing scales. It's like trying to keep up with Ella Fitzgerald when she was scattin'. Why do these singers not get that's it's not just them singing?

17. The basic tune was Anachreon In Heaven...
a British drinking song. It can only be sung well by operatic tenors and sopranos. Pop singers, with a few exceptions, are incapable of singing the anthem...they do not have the sense of pitch and/or range.

Wish we could change to America The Beautiful which is both well-written and the lyrics make sense. Almost everyone can sing it which is a plus.

Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 05:41 PM by Tuesday Afternoon
omg!!! those all important, immortal words that sanctify our NATIONAL PRIDE....omg.

SHE FUCKED IT UP>>>>>SHE MUST BE CRUCIFIED and forever more hang in her head in shame.

she caterwauled it...no.

she tried to give it her all and did her best to sing her heart out.

She was obviously nervous as hell and had trouble with the echo...but as good, progressive liberals we must NOT FORGIVE HER!!!

She sucketh forever more, AMEN.

19. There was a story on the local Seattle newscast last night
They asked random people on the street yesterday to sing the National Anthem. Out of the 30 or 40 people they featured in clips, ONE PERSON knew the correct lyrics and could finish the song.

My husband told me last night that he does not know the lyrics to the National Anthem. I was shocked.

I remain very surprised that the National Anthem was not pre-taped for the Super Bowl; it has been for years.

26. Thank you.
I was waiting for someone to bring up all the famous singers (and there are plenty) who have managed to mangle "The Star-Spangled Banner."

In Goulet's defense, he was Canadian. I mean, how many U.S. citizens could manage "O Canada," unless they were hockey fans from, say, Michigan or western New York?

27. I was so disappointed because I just knew that a fantastic artist such as she is
would be able to inspire a nation with her interpretation. I'm shocked it didn't turn out. I so look to Christina for inspiration and leadership in all matters patriotic. Her sense of style, humility, caring and compassion seem a living tribute to the anthem.:puke:

33. her singing was so horrible, I didn't know she screwed up the words.
WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST SING THE SONG THE WAY IT'S WRITTEN??

People should be able to SING ALONG and when they get all artsy-frigging-fartsy with it, NO ONE CAN!!

And yes, I was a voice major at one time so I appreciate talent. However, the National Anthem should not be a venue for "creative renditions" that render the song unrecognizable
