What is it with the pockets (or lack of) on women's jeans these days?
Yet another fashion trend I hate.

Just recently I have bought a couple of pairs of jeans and the pockets are much too shallow to hold anything.

Now, maybe I am weird but I USE pockets. For keys, a phone, my Ipod, a pocket knife. Especially when I am working.

But this trend of low-rise jeans has led to the incredible shrinking pocket and it pisses me off. Well not really. But it is irritation.

I am thinking of writing a strongly worded letter to...someone.

1. I thought that has always been a problem
I'm 33 and have always had that complaint from when I was a teenager. It is because women are supposed to buy purses and keep things there. I'm not saying that I agree. In fact, I had no interest in carrying a purse as a teen.

12. Maybe it depends on the brand.
For me this is a recent thing. I've never had a problem with Lee or Levis, for example. But I bought some off brand and, sure enough, the pockets are too small.

i go back to the atomic age (the 1950s) and i can assure you that women's jeans or other clothing never had adequate pockets

it spoils the line of your figure and makes you look fat if you put things in pockets

if you don't believe me, have a friend photograph you in jeans that you think you look good in-- with nothing in pockets and stuff in pockets -- you'll be shocked by the difference in yr appearance

when i travel alone and don't wanna be harassed by the horny, i put stuff in my pockets, it works like magic

20. It's always been a problem. I used to sew pockets into everything
because it was so damn annoying and hate carrying purses, too.

2. "Just recently I have bought a couple of pairs of jeans and the pockets are much too shallow"
That was a mistake. Don't bother with a letter. There's no such thing as anti-money and you can't anti-buy what you dislike.

Stop buying what you don't want. Look for what you do want. When you find it, let your friends and relatives know what you found. Ideally, you would be able to make a lot of money by selling and increasing the popularity of what you do like.

3. I could see why low-rise jeans have small pockets -- there's not much room to put them.
However, usable-type pockets on ladies' pants in general tend to add bulk to the hip & rear areas.

5. Bingo...
focus group and sales data says "women don't want functional pockets as much as they want cuts and lines (in terms of design) that make them look smaller in the hip and rear."

That is the trade-off there. Functional pockets mean a looser fit means your ass looks bigger. Generally the older a woman is, the less they care about that...but they also tend to buy less pairs and less-expensive jeans.

If you want to matter, express some suggestive motivation that you're as willing to spend $200/pair for 6 pairs a year as my 18 year old cousin is; until then her opinion matters more than yours because she's worth more $$ to Levi's, Lee, Lucky Brand, etc. so they're going to cater to her whims instead of yours. Gotta pay to play.

21. I think that is an over simplification
There is a market for Taco bell food. I imagine there always will be. However, there is also a market for local Mexican restaurants that cost more and are not open at midnight. The one does not negate the other.

So teens account for 6pair/year, and adults maybe 1pair/2years. Given 300+ million citizens, that means there are still ballpark 50 million women over 40 who might want a pair of functional jeans every couple years. That's still a hell of a market.

Its the same deal with fat people clothing(as opposed to sized up versions of standard clothing that hang funny on fat people). How rare is it to find clothing designed for fat people? And yet how much of the nation is obese?

It seems odd to me that with as massive a marketplace as the US is, they seem to base all clothing designs off of a few small demographics that have higher purchasing power. Have they never heard of a niche market?

4. Women are supposed to have smooth silhouettes
Putting things in pockets ruins that. Not my personal belief, but I think that's an expectation.

13. Well jeans are functional (for me) and I don't give a shit about fashion.
Which I know makes me unusual (apparently).

19. That makes two of us. But I've had this issue for years.
Especially with work pants. I work in a school and sorry to say it is foolish to leave a purse around, so I HAVE to put my id, cards, cash, cell phone, keys and meds on my person. I have only 2 pairs of slacks that will accomodate all that.

6. I don't know. I never heard of that. I just ordered sweat pants,
not now available in stores, like I have had for years.
I get them and ... no pockets. ??
What happened?
I don't know what to do with my hands.

23. The problem I see with those is that there is too much pockets.
If I put a bunch of 'stuff' in those big cargo pockets, the pants will fall down. The only waist thing is the elastic.
And it won't hold much weight.
So just one side pocket was what I thought I was going to get, but got none.

10. Vintage jeans are the way to go.
I personally hate stretch jeans, & have had success on eBay & at thrift stores in finding classic women's denim jeans with real pockets. I use pockets, too!

15. This online store appears to offer women's jeans with pockets:
http://www.rawganique.com/Womens/organic-cotton-denim-jeans.htm

In fact, from the longer description within
The RG901's are true boot cut jeans; they go comfortably over your boots and feature 5 classic jeans pockets, two in front, two in back, with a change pocket inside the right front pocket, as well as brass zippers and buttons throughout.

I know from experience of buying products from them (shoes, belts) that they are very good (and prompt) at answering emailed questions. From looking at the other jeans-sections, they have women modeling the "unisex" designs, too.

Might be worth looking into it, plus they're organic and sweatshop-free.

:D

I always look for pants without them. I don't need them, and don't need the bulk they add in the wrong places. :hi:

She wore skin tight jeans and kept putting stuff in her pockets. We just walked behind her and picked her stuff up...
