I had seen that your profile wasn't here for awhile (so couldn't PM you) and so I'd asked her to pass along my best thoughts and prayers etc. Not sure if she did, but I know she's had some rough times too, and is a person with a kind heart, so I certainly wouldn't hold it against her if she hadn't... The German course will, obviously, be immensely useful. "The Ugly American" actually IS
so common overseas (at least when I lived there in the 70's) that Germans LOVE any
American who's taken the trouble to learn how to say more than "another beer" and "you
wanna?" (not that those weren't extremely useful phrases for me).

I was pretty fluent by the time I left after 4 years -- which makes me even MORE
ashamed of the fact that I've lived here in Arizona for TWELVE years without picking
up any Spanish. Though I HAVE learned one of the Spanish words for "bad" that makes

ha ha ha. I've been here 8 years and can speak the language but I haven't reached the level of fluency that would allow me to insult people or say get a job, both very important qualities of life I'd like to achieve.

...after I had been back in the States for awhile, the Army was looking for
translators for their Reforger exercises (the big annual NATO games). I would
have been speaking to farmers and local politicians about mostly physical
damage to properyies for which we would compensate.

My interviewer was an American major who had gotten a Master's degree at the
University of Vienna -- spoke better German than GERMANS did. Out of about two
dozen applicants, his report said that I was the only one who should have been
applying (the rest were pretty much hoping that "another beer" would solve most
international problems -- though, to be honest, it SHOULD).

I ended up PISSED OFF and not going as my company commander wanted me to
fill a Radar O'Riley type of job -- and since we were a global first-response unit...
he got his wish (the job turned out to be great -- though I would have traded it
in an INSTANT for the translator gig).

The other is the man who was my father-in-law -- career military, tough as nails,
married to my ex's German mom for about 15 years or more. I had never heard him
speak German. Then one day, he was helping us move into our apartment and his
car was blocking the entranceway to our small building's enclosed parking lot.
The German man waiting to get in beeped at us, my FIL waved and opened his door
to pull out of the way... and the driver LAID ON his horn nonstop -- yelling
something unheard in his car.

I learned that day NEVER to piss my FIL off. He advanced on the car with a look
on his face that caused the driver to visibly GULP and frantically lock all his
doors. My FIL stood at his window BLASTING him for the next 4 or 5 minutes with
the most eloquent cussing-out in German that I've ever heard in my life... in
ANY language. He insulted the man. He insulted the man's dog. He insulted the
man's mother. He insulted the man's MOTHER'S dog.
