People watching the Packers game - what was up with that Bears time out?
I don't know much about football, but why would a coach call a time out after a snap and before the play went any more?

Was it just a total brain fart on the dude's part, or was he thinking he could prevent something bad from happening (like, did he maybe think the play was gonna go into the shitter and they'd lose yardage?)

And it is standard practice that people are actually allowed to call a time during play if they have the ball? Seems kind of dumb to me. They should only be allowed to call a time out during dead time.

2. After a snap?
I would have to see what you are talking about. I'm watching 49ers-Cardinals myself. I never seen a timeout after a snap before. I've seen right before the snap (usually on last second field goals to ice the kicker) and the center snapped it right after the coach called a timeout and the kicker got a free practice kick.

4. Major mistake
He waited a moment too long to call the time-out. Brain fart.
Either team can call time-out as long as the clock isn't running.

5. What do you mean by "clock isn't running"?
Edited on Sun Jan-02-11 06:53 PM by JonLP24
Clock continues to run whenever a possession continues inbounds. That could be by either a completed catch or a run. As long as the play ends inbounds the clock will continue to run and either coach can call a timeout. In fact in two-minute situations you'll see coaches call timeouts for the specific purpose of stopping the clock.

Sorry if you already knew this stuff. I just don't understand what you mean "clock isn't running".

6. Thanks for the info, mokawanis, and everone else - but why would he want even want to call a TO?
I just can't understand why the coach would even want to call a time out at that point. Seems wasteful and silly.
