This is a true story relayed from someone who deals with tough and messy situations for not very much money in our public school system:
There was a loud argument that went to pushing and screaming between 2 third graders. The boy calling the girl a liar and the girl loudly protesting.
Teacher stops them and asks "What is this about ?" Boy: "She says she's a virgin and she IS NOT!"
At this point the teacher has the boy escorted to the principals office so that they can talk to him privately. And now the boy, who is... shall we say... a little bit rule bound, a little bit judgmental ... and now he is upset that he is in some kind of trouble for "telling the truth." So they get his regular teacher in the room and the principal and they ask him to go through the story, why is he so upset?
Boy: "Susie says that she's a virgin and she is NOT!"
The adults the room look at each other. This is a 9 YO classmate he is talking about and they are thinking not 'this is impossible', they are thinking ' here we go again, CPS, etc.'
His teacher asks softly: How do you know? Boy: "Because I saw her in the lunchroom!"
Again the adults look at each other. They have had problems to deal with in this school but this is just...
Teacher, hesitatingly: "In the lunchroom?" Boy: "Yes! She ate a hamburger!"
It took a second, maybe two. A hamburger? Virgin. Then they both broke out laughing. The girl had told him she was vegan, he heard 'virgin'. Whew!
