The odd thing is, the rest of the music in "The Nanny" (jazz piano riffs, etc.) is good. Go figure.

Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.
His fast gun's for hire, he's the calling wind.
A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin.

Paladin, Paladin where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin far, far from home.

Worst: I forget the forgettable ones.

11. Peter Gunn is an excellent theme song...
I think I'll make it my new ringtone. My late mother had a friend whose brother was named Peter Gunn. He had the name long before the TV character. We also had a neighbor whose father was named Floyd Lawson, the barber on The Andy Griffith Show.

15. a note about the MASH theme song
Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 01:26 PM by Bertha Venation
It was part of an unforgettable scene in the movie the show was based on.

The first verse:

through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see
that suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please

20. another note
Mike Altman is the son of the original film's director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he composed the song's lyrics. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that his son earned more than a million US dollars for co-writing the song while he only made US $70,000 for directing the movie.

41. "Greatest American Hero"
Look at what's happened to me,
I can't believe it myself.
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,
It should've been somebody else.

Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free-.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me.

It's like a light of a new day-,
It came from out of the blue.
Breaking me out of the spell I was in,
Making all of my wishes come true-.

Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free-.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me.

Dr. Who, The Beverly Hillbillies, Mission Impossible, My Three Sons, Miami Vice, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and possibly several more for best.

Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 11:37 PM by orleans
suicide is painless/mash theme

"Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

(REFRAIN):

that suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

(REFRAIN)

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

(REFRAIN)

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.

(REFRAIN)

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

(REFRAIN)

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'

(REFRAIN)

'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please"

music by johnny mandel
lyrics by mike altman

"Mike Altman (born 1955) is the son of film director Robert Altman.

"At the age of 14 he wrote the lyrics to "Suicide Is Painless", the theme song for his father's 1970 movie, MASH.<1> Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that he was paid $70,000 for directing the film, whereas Mike made over a million dollars from the song.

Edited on Mon Nov-29-10 04:34 AM by wickerwoman
They're not horrible in themselves and they're both kind of appropriate to the shows, but both are inevitably cranked up much louder than the show itself, both have irritating sounds and both leave me scrambling for the mute button.

Best is hard to say. I agree about Weeds (Little Boxes) especially when they had a different guest artist for each show. I'd have to go with The Sopranos since it's so perfect it's hard to believe it wasn't written specifically for the show and even when I'm doing a marathon I don't always skip through the opening credits. I'll listen to it again and again.
