It's not as cool as it seems. He also decided that the subject I teach is "pussy." Whatever points he earned with me for the sheer stupid of "Mike Hawk" he just up and blew it with the "pussy" thing. Looks like I'll have to waste 30 minutes of my life talking to his obviously inadequate parents.

7. Just one thing...
...I hope they are obviously inadequate for other reasons. I mean, I hope you have more evidence that they are inadequate than just your student's behavior. My son has a lot of behavior problems in school and in summer camp. We've had him evaluated 3 times. We've been to special classes. We use a behavior modification system very consistently that has really worked and he's improved a lot, but he still has some issues, and as he needs to learn new skills and routines, he's just slower than the other kids. Academically, he's a couple years ahead of his peers, but socially, he's behind, and he has trouble following directions and controlling his impulses. He's a lot of work and we work hard.

At the beginning of summer camp this year, he had a couple of incidents and the director called me in. She immediately assumed, without knowing our history or asking any questions, that I didn't take his behavior seriously and that I was disengaged. It was really enraging.

I filled her in on everything (which perhaps I should have done upon his admission, I admit, but I was worried about drawing prejudice) and I explained the behavior modification tool we use at home. She did a 180 and really impressed me by having me train her staff how to use the same tool, and he ended up doing very well at camp.

But some kids are more difficult than others, and some kids exhibit bad behaviors and that doesn't automatically mean their parents are inadequate or disengaged. It really upset me to be treated that way.

11. Thanks.
Believe me, I feel for teachers. If not for my own experience, I might make the same assumption.

9. What age is this?
Curious whether it's a younger kid who wouldn't know better, or an older kid who thinks he's being a rebel, or a teen who's probably trying to win a dare.

I called my teacher a dildo once in class in 8th grade. I had no idea what a dildo was, but some older kid called him the same thing earlier, and I thought he was reaction to it was funny. Definite learning moment for me. :) Luckily, the teacher (drama, English) was cool. He just shook his head, asked "Do you even know what that means?" and when I looked scared to death and shook my head, he said "Don't use words you don't understand." The rest of the class explained it to me later.
