Elena is now a brunette. Every anglo gal in TX over 40 is blonde,
Is this a trend in your area? This (too) blonde, often straw-like hair in hopes of covering gray?

1. This is California. It was a "trend" 30 or 40 years ago.
Now it's more like a "habit".

2. A reason for women over 50
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 12:07 PM by Sanity Claws
I am brunette and dye my gray in a matching color. I have to do it every 5 weeks before the roots are so noticable. At this point, I'm considering to let it just go gray and get the salt and pepper look because I'm sick of dyeing my hair.

I asked my hair dresser is there a way to remove the dye or do I have to let it grow out and have that horrible two tone hair for at least a year.

If I have the dye removed (I forgot what the process is called), it turns the hair yellowish and most women dye their hair blonde as a result. One advantage of being blonde is that the gray does not show up as much.

I imagine that is why some olderwomen do; they no long dye their hair brunette but start going blond so that the grays do not show as much.

32. Here's how to go gray when you have dyed hair
First off, permanent hair color is permanent. The tint might fade but hair that has been dyed cannot be returned to its natural state. The process your hairdresser was talking about is called "stripping" which is just another term for a peroxide treatment. The hair ends up looking yellow because it's basically been through a weak bleaching process. In order to rectify the yellow, a toner must be applied and you end up with a shade of blond.

The only true way to completely get rid of dyed hair is to cut it off. I imagine you don't want to take such a drastic step.

The second best way to transition from dyed hair to natural gray is by getting it highlighted. You hairdresser either pulls thin sections of your hair through a cap and lightens it or they take thin sections, apply highlighter to them and wrap them in foil. If your hairdresser is exceptionally talented, they can apply highlighting product to only the dyed parts of the sections. The highlights will camouflage/soften the demarcation between the dyed/not dyed hair.

3. I'm 38 and I'm a new blonde
My hair grows rather rapidly and roots show in as little as 2-3 weeks. I was dyeing my hair to a color like my natural one - a light brown with reddish tones - but the gray really popped out and was driving me insane. So I dyed it blonde and I must say that now I don't have to dye it as frequently and it does look pretty good with my features.

If there was a way for me not to look like a skunk, I'd like to go gray (which for me is more like white).

6. No--different trend in my area (kinda scary)
Every woman in my village over the age of 50 has this SAME EXACT hairstyle (note: I don't know who this woman is--I just pulled an image off teh google that is a close approximation of the village 'do):

I'm serious--EVERY woman has the same look--short in the back (very short layers) and long on top. All the same color--a kind of very light ash blonde. I'm 44 (will be 45 in January) and I have long curly reddish hair (dyed--it was originally brown). I'm afraid that on the morning of my 50th birthday, I will wake up and find I have the village hairdo. Like the Twilight Zone. AAAaaaaaaaah! :scared:

7. I was going white by my very early 30s
I dislike using hair dye and some studies have shown that the darker the dye, the more dangerous it is. However, I live in the city and have to give some effort into good grooming. OK, not that country gals don't, but there is more leeway, I believe. So, I do have my hair color done to blend, what is left of my natural, young hair color, is very light anyway. As we get older, lighter hair appears more natural, older women who try to keep their darker locks may actually be aging themselves.

auburn (red in the sun, brown under incandescents)going white; I even have curly bangs. Good grooming, just not necessarily high fashion!

10. I dye mine blonde
I was a natural light blonde as a kid so I have the coloring for it.

My hair is now a combo wiry grey &pepper on top with mousy brown in the back and sides. Ugh. So I color it for now. My fiance likes darker hair so I consented to coloring it dark ash blonde in the fall/winter and saving the wattage for summer. Seems to work pretty well. And yes, the blonde mixes well with the grey. I have hair that is tough to color and even if I leave the dye in for the maximum time, there are still some strands that won't color.

In about 5-10 years, I would love to either quit or find a really great silver color.

Note: If you change your hair color, take a look at your makeup colors too. They might need a freshener. and don't forget your eyebrows.

11. Because your complexion fades as you age beauticians often suggest that
ageing women go blond. Dark hair dye and grey hair do not mix so well...the roots show after a week. Not so with blond streakes.

19. I do it too
I've always had dirty blond hair, but I have light blond highlights added to cover the gray. I started going gray about 22. I'm 40 now, so you can imagine how gray I am. I'm too lazy to wear it darker because I would have to color it so often.

I agree with you though. It is very odd to see so many women with really light hair. At least you have a little more sunlight in Texas. I hope my fellow fakers don't think they're fooling anyone strolling around with sun-kissed locks in Ohio.

Towhead until about age 8, then progressed toward dishwater blonde, but it bleached in the summer sun back to light blonde. I'm 45 now & have to color it to cover the gray, but it looks OK on me because it's close to my natural color.

30. I'm 50
My hair was red till I was 2, and then it turned strawberry blonde. I colored it red in my 30's and 40's because I liked the look, but it costs a mint to keep it up. It's now a warm golden blonde. I'm happy to say that so far, I've avoided the "straw" texture, and I get lots of compliments on the color.

I walked into a salon last month and asked for a change. I now have the bob in the front, short hair in the back thing every other fifty-year-old woman has. I'm wondering if I should get it cut even shorter. LOL
