Poll question: Sport coats on men. Yay or nay?
I was mixing up some cranberry martinis with my wife last night (you had to realize that alcohol was involved with the Fap Fap post) when I spilled some juice on my regular jacket. It was a bit chilly when I got up for work this morning, and my jacket was still wet from cleaning it last night, so I dusted off my only sport coat, threw it on, and wore it to work today.

In my first class, a young woman commented, "What's the occasion Mr. X? You look great today!" I've since been complimented three other times.

This is a bit baffling to me. I've always considered suits and sport coats to be outdated, frumpy, and overly formal, and only own this thing for the occasional business dinner or job interview. I don't see the appeal to them AT ALL, and am more of a "blue jeans and button down shirt" kind of guy. I really didn't think that anyone under 40 actually liked sport coats anymore.

What say you? Good, bad, or ugly?

1. I'm a man and wear them.

I'm over 50 if that matters to you. I don't care what other men wear, so didn't choose that option.

I mostly wear sport coats in the spring and fall, when the weather may be too cool for no coat, not cool enough for a heavy coat. Sport coats look much nicer than hooded sweatshirts, and I can and do wear them with tee shirts and blue jeans.

3. I'm 42 and I wear them all the time.
They are a great way to jazz up a wardrobe when you don't want to wear a suit, or in situations in which a suit is not called for.

You can wear them with dress slacks, dress shirt, and a tie. All of that, and no tie. With khakis and a dress shirt or a polo. Or even with jeans and over a tee-shirt. Almost anything goes.

I love sport coats.

4. I like them but I'm biased...
I loathe the jeans and a button down thing almost as much as the khakis and a polo thing. I think it's unprofessional for anybody in any work setting other than fast food worker or Walmart greeter.

So much so that in a past position supervising canvassers I provided a clear dress code forbidding them (slacks only, no khakis, no jeans, no polo shirts. Shined shoes. No sneakers. Ties and jackets required for males. No restrictions on color.) and when my staff rebelled (they all showed up out of dress code in a substitute dress code they preferred. khakis and polo shirts to be precise.) I fired all of them in one shot. 14 openings the next morning for people who wanted to look professional, be taken serious and could follow a simple dress code.

7. No, I'm absolutely serious.
I'm fairly easy-going but in terms of work, I'm uncompromising when it comes to representing me or a client.

If you expect to be taken seriously, you'd better look professional. Working from home, wear whatever you want. Going to be seen in public, I expect you to be well turned out. I don't take people dressed that way seriously when they show up to meetings with me either.

16. My brothers used to fight with my parents about where to go out to dinner and if they had to wear
jackets and ties when we went out for family meals.

11. I vote other -
"When I retire, I'm going to keep one tie, one white shirt, one suit and donate everything khaki, tie, Men's Warehouse and Dockers to Goodwill/Salvation Army".

I are a proud m'er-ef'n SLOB. I only buy nice clothes because work forces us to wear them. I don't get these people who don't own a pair of jeans and walk their dogs in business casual mode on a Saturday.

12. If I'm not in a suit or a tux, I'm usually in a sport coat. It just looks better,
And for much of the year, it substitutes for a coat while keeping me looking classy.

I'm all for looking good when one goes out in public.

13. My work went from "suits" to "casual" in one fell swoop
So, never acquired a sportcoat.

When I see a guy in a sportcoat, I usually think he's either a cop, or somebody with a concealed weapon permit.

:hi:

18. ties are optional, but sport coats look great

I love it when my husband wears one; when we have a bit more cash on hand I'm going to buy him a few nice ones - 2 spring/summer/fall and 2 fall/winter. They make EVERYTHING look better - nice slacks, khakis, jeans, EVERYTHING.
