Does anyone else leave a bowl of candy on the porch on the honor system?
for the last few years the kids are off with their friends on Halloween and it's just me and Alley. We often have an invite to dinner at a nearby friend's house. Every other year or so we leave a giant bowl of candy with a "Please only take one sign" and have always got our bowl back.. Shiny clean..

I wonder how many trick-or-treaters it takes to empty the bowl?

3. I tried that one year
The whole bowl was emptied in about 15 minutes, so it's just took one future Republican.

19. OMG that IS genius!!
I've tried leaving a bowl of candy out in the past, and forget about it, the first teenager that comes by takes it all. Never again.

But an EMPTY bowl??? Awesome idea!!

22. Well, I wouldn't want to leave an empty bowl.
But maybe a bowl of ice cubes would do?

11. Naw, they have to stick to the formula doncha know
The greedy little raccoons would take the entire thing. Besides no one but the raccoons can find my house anyway.

14. yeah that's what i was thinking
i've had a family of as many as 6 raccoons, and i'm not even in the country, people don't realize that most suburbs are full up with raccoonns and possums too, they'll even try to take the bowl

i'd rather not encourage them to boldly climb onto my porch, i had enough of a heart attack the day i found an armadillo on my porch (which is not very big)

13. I think they may take more than one piece...
When we have to be gone during Halloween evening, we leave a bowl full of candy out by the jack-o-lantern so it can't be missed. Some candy has been taken when we return, but not all and our bowl has never been taken...yet. Of course, we live across from a xian church that hosts a Trunk or Treat every year, so most of the gangstas, gremlins and goblins we get, fear the wrath of god.

But, I love the kids and costumes, so when I can, I answer the door.

16. I used to do that....
Came back one year-- about five or six years ago-- to find the bowl smashed in the street along with the jack-o-lantern and other decorations I'd left, and obscenities scrawled in chalk all over the porch where I'd left the bowl. I'm assuming someone emptied it, and someone else objected to finding it emptied. Anyway, that was the last year I put out Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters. Now I just leave the porch lights off and lock the front gate. STAY OFF MY LAWN, DAMMIT!

18. We used to do this as bait when I lived in an actual neighborhood
Then scare the pee-mortal shit out of trick-or-treaters when they reached into the bowl.

Good times ;)

the kids in their costumes.

21. I usually do that
and since I've been living in mostly child-free apartment buildings, I've always been able to retrieve the candy the next morning.

Now, however, I'm in a garden-style complex replete with rug rats. I either put the bag (you have a bowl?!) out on the doorknob -- or answer the door... :scared:

24. I just thought of the perfect way to do this.
Get an old toilet, clean it out, even seal the interior surfaces if you want (most candy is sealed anyway these days) and put all the candy in that bowl }(

28. Doesn't that kind of scream
I'm not home/not paying attention. Please TP my house?

I'd be kind of worried about burglars in my neighborhood- but then we don't have any kids either so the point is sort of moot.

29. Depends on the neighborhood and the kids...
I've done this on numerous occasions, and with mixed results.

Naturally, there is never candy left, but i did catch someone trying to leave with the whole plastic cauldron once.
