2. I'm torn on this...

for selfish reasons I'd like 18, but I'm going to have to go with 16. I don't want to see the guys any more banged up than they usually are.

3. I agree. By the end of the season, most teams are dead men walking....

...horrible idea. Unfortunately, the players may have to sign-on in order to have leverage in keeping a lock-out from happening.
