3. Good question
Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 12:03 PM by abq e streeter
I think that in many ways if it's over, it's only because it succeeded in many of its aims. Despite the continuing, and no doubt permanent opposition from the puritanical elements of this society (and I regrettably do not exempt elements of the left from this, though it is mostly from the religious right), there is a great deal more open-mindedness and tolerance of an individual's right to live and express their sexuality as they see fit to, than there was when I was growing up (I'm 59....WHAT??? 59??? DEAR GOD , how did that happen?....oops sorry, got off topic and carried away there)
So, I think the revolutionaries in this case, can claim a significant level of victory.
AIDS certainly put a brake on "free love" or whatever media driven label you want to use, and there has, as there always is, been a perversion of the original intent, with the pressure on young girls to equate female empowerment with "sex object" ways of expressing that. But overall, I think that many breakthroughs against our history and tradition of anti-sex puritanism by the sexual revolutionaries of the 60's have lasted and become ingrained in our culture, with ever increasing acceptance of "alternative" expressions of sexuality, including but not limited to the movement toward full equality for gay people, that would have been unimaginable a couple of generations ago.

Apologies for a serious answer to a lounge question, but it's a good question and valid topic for a serious discussion.

5. young girls to equate female empowerment with "sex object" ways of expressing that
excellent post. i agree totally because you included one area many on du ignore.

i got the best of it, late seventies, early 80's before the aids and std scare, yet with the freedom. actual female empowerment. but today i see the supposed empowerment to female perverted more to male empowerment over the female. shift that.... i think we are there.

and agree with the rest.

12. Condoms are proof that the STDs won
The revolution failed so bad that we need to put plastic bags around penises to have recreational sex because sexual diseases are so ubiquitous.

18. I disagree, when people can't have recreational sex without latex biohazard packaging
that doesn't even offer total protection then the sexual revolution backfired.

I see STDs as a failure of the sexual revolution. Millions of people are going to die from sexual diseases, millions have already. We had a sexual revolution but it became a nightmare instead of a panacea. How many millions of people have herpes, warts, or any other non-life threatening diseases?

If the sexual revolution had succeeded: Having recreation sex outside of marriage wouldn't literally put someone in danger of dying.

21. there is a word for what you are syaing, i dont know what it is. one of the reason free sex
has never been encouraged in our society is not this "puritan" religious only thinking. part of the reason restraint is encourage is for the repercussions of recreational sex. this is merely one of the repercussions of recreational sex. along with babies that are not wanted and other reasons.

action/reaction. universal law.

I hasten to add that, since each man will be required to do prodigious service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics, which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

...when sex was still in style, Aids kind of put a wet blanket on a lot of fun.

people are still having sex and they are still having multiple partners, and they are not waiting for marriage.

how did the sexual revolution end?

sexual revolution was nothing about no repercussions with excessive partnering without care.

30. "we just didnt have the concerns". I think that is the point I was trying to make...
...maybe I didn't make it well. We were hedonistic in the 70's. Aids was a big reality check for us. We had to "rethink" sex. Before, we just had a good time.

Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 09:21 PM by old mark
I went back to college when I was 48 - in the '90's -some "real" college kids asked me if the sexual revolution was real (this was the big scare AIDS period and I guess nobody was fucking anybody else..) I kind of looked sheepish, and said, "Well...Yeah!" and they were really pissed, like they had been deliberately denied something.

Not MY fault, man...

33. It ended with that "Jennifer Aniston's bum" cover on Rolling Stone
After that, there was nothing left to say. It was like an Aurora Borealis or something, just a brilliant and blinding moment, where the seven wonders of the world realized they'd have to make room for an eighth.

Who won? When that issue of Rolling Stone was released, we all won.
