Does anyone use the word "may" to ask permission in RL?

I remember as a kid studying the use of can/may, but like most people, I use "can."

4. Nope, I don't say "can" either. I just say, "Gimme that."

5. You actually say something? Well lah-di-dah for you, Ms. Manners!
I just grab and if someone objects I bite them. :)

7. May I ask what prompted this question?
:P

I still know many people who use "may" rather than "can." I think that I notice it because I'm one of them. I do sometimes substitute "can" in casual conversations.

9. I do, and so do my kids.
It was definitely drummed into me. Sometimes I have to bite my tongue to keep from automatically correcting others.

10. I do. Especially when ordering in a restaurant. I hate when people say "Give me the..."
My mother always used to correct me if I said "can".

11. I correct students many times a day....
I always remember one of my elementary teachers saying "If you are able" when someone asked, "Can I use the restroom?"
