4. When you start obsessing over what people post on FB
It is best to take a long, long break. A very long break.

26. Yeah, scientific ignorance and illogic and ignorance in general
bothers me, a weakness I know. But at the end of the day, I don't really care about what the posters in GD think about me. Hell, I can't work at NIH anymore because I was smeared by some really awful people who hated me personally and for political reasons. Caring at the time of posting and obsessing about what people think of me are two totally different things. I've been called every name in the book. And I really have no interest in listening to the things people who I don't respect and who dislike me say. Really, outside of those closest to me, I don't care what anyone thinks about me. And if you want to think badly of me, as it seems you do, I don't really care either. And thats the way I am in life. Popularity (and obsessing over people not liking one, is a form of trying to be popular) is a shitty thing to care about where I come from. There are truly a lot of petty obsessed people around here that need to take a look at their own behavior before they start accusing others. Projection--not just for breakfast anymore.
I also know a lot of people now personally who get ragged on here now and in the past and they are very good people whom I respect because they too don't give a shit what anyone else thinks about them.
Personally the cults of personality I see around here (and particularly the lounge) are nauseating. You are however welcome to believe as many do that I'm a mean ol' nasty bully. I really don't care..except to laugh about the silliness of the whole business.

5. I'm totally addicted to the internet and DU is part of that
The internet is not actually entertaining 90% of the time, but it gives the appearance of being entertaining.

Part of this illusion of entertainment is clicking between DU, FB, and several other sites looking for new, interesting content.

Don't get me wrong; DU can be highly entertaining. But is the entertainment factor worth the amount of time I spend mining for new, interesting content? Probably not.

8. The internet (and DU) feeds the monkey mind.

If you are prone to addiction (like me) it's like sensory crack.

9. When a website becomes your outlet to put people down...
and convey yourself as a less than intelligent revolting prick, because you are too timid and lack the courage to behave that way in real life, then it becomes time to step away.

If you stop recognizing who your audience really is sitting behind the keyboard (young man speaking to old woman, healthy person speaking to sick person), then it is time to step away from the keyboard.

If you start posting fantasies about how you are going to get people in a room and beat the shit out of them, it is probably time to step away.

When a man behaves as a complete misogynist to a woman online, without regard to who he is talking to for real, it is probably time to step away.

When you need the internet to boost your real personality to something "stronger" than it is in real life, then it is time to step away.

When you refuse to financially support a website (not due to lack of funds), but yet use it to bolster your real life personality, it is time to step away.

10. When you are unable to recognize a writer's "intent" vs. "the flat word"...
Then it is time to step away. Good intent trumps everything else. Bad intent trumps everything else.

11. When you start believing that perhaps more than just a handful...
of the people that you communicate with on the internet are your "friends", you need to step away from the computer.

12. When it becomes difficult for you to completely convey your emotions...
without the use of emoticons and smilies, then it is time for you to step away.

When the traffic is slow and there isn't hardly anyone posting at the moment, I browse the forums all the way back until I hit the archives. It's amazing how many threads you miss the first time.
