Ichii the Killer was released in late 2002 (I think) in Japanese theaters. It's not available in the US through normal channels. The trailer is for European Region 2 DVD audiences.

I must say that for those who are into the horror movie ( especially japanese ones) genre this looks to be the ULTIMATE slasher film. But despite my love for the scarier flicks in life I dont think I will be catching this one any time soon.

I HATE slashers and blood and guts. It's not that I'm squeamish - I can watch live surgery! I think the plastination "mummies" are fascinating. But, slashers are just sick. I don't know how anyone could enjoy one. It must have something to do with the fantasy of watching someone else suffer.

I've seen a lot of sickening gore and violence, but that was awful. I really try to avoid sex horror/torture flicks, too real and disturbing for me.

Honestly, anything that markets itself as "ooh, look how controversial we're being" is retarded (see anything written by Joe Ezterhas) and tailor-made for the lowest common denominator.

If you need blood, guts, and violence towards women to get your rocks off, seek help. NOW.

18. I haven't watched the trailer

But I HAVE seen the movie! There's a nice Dutch DVD (region 2, PAL) that contains the uncut version.

I wouldn't describe it as a "slasher" flick, at least not in the sense of the conventional American lame-o Friday the 13th knock-off. Like many of Takashi Miike's movies, Ichi involves the yakuza and Japanese criminal underground. (If the trailer doesn't make it clear, Ichi is a Japanese movie with largely Japanese dialogue.)

I didn't find Ichi to be scary at all. It is, however, quite violent, albeit in an over-the-top, blackly humorous kind of way that's typical of Miike. I recall that most of the violence was meted out on men, not women. Additionally, the titular character is actually a sympathetic figure. It's not a "great" movie, but neither is it a simple exercise in gore-splattering. Fans of both gory horror and David Lynch will probably enjoy it.

For those who want a good, tense, scary horror flick, check out Miike's Audition. It's available on DVD in the U.S.

Miike's Visitor Q -- which is also available on DVD in the U.S. -- is IMO far sicker than Ichi the Killer. Visitor Q is like an exercise in the shattering of taboos. Be warned!

Miike is a little overrated in some circles, but his films are a welcome change from the moribund U.S. horror scene.
