1. Among the more recent Thompson songs, this is easily my favorite:

I can imagine this one being a million kinds of fun to play live. The whole "Mock Tudor" album is probably his strongest set of songs since "Shoot Out The Lights."

2. He has a new CD coming out real soon
and played three or four songs from it, and they were great.

3. I thought you were going to say he didn't play...

...1952 Vincent Black Lightning.

.
.
We were an all-original band -- and grew bored easily, so we were constantly
writing and using new material. There were a few of ours that people had SO
much fun with that we kept using them -- but THEIR fun was still translating
to OUR fun, so it wasn't tiring. I could imagine, though -- that 10-20-or-30
years of playing the same song would grow really fucking old... though that's
where covers of your own material comes in, I guess.
.
We got stoned during a creative session once, and my rhythm guitarist and I
did a HILARIOUS lounge version of one of our most popular numbers... sleeze
and cheese virtually DRIPPING off of it. We never attempted it live, though --
as we could never get halfway through it without losing it completely.
.
.
.
.
I've always been amazed at what a combination of guitar AND voice that man has.

5. He most definitely did play that

it was a solo show too, and I thoroughly enjoyed just seeing him with an acoustic guitar. The guy's fucking amazing. As I said, I'd never seen him in person before.

11. I'm kinda envious that you were gigging regularly (?) doing all originals
I was in a mostly original band a few years ago with guys that were not virtuoso musicians (hell, neither am I) but certainly competent, but were absolutely the best songwriters I've ever been involved with (one of em had been listed as "one of America's top ten unsigned songwriters" in the mid-90's; I'm having a brain fart as to which magazine though ) and we did a few of mine too. We could hardly ever get gigs , and most of those few hardly paid much more than the gas money to get there, and when we did gig, people would just keep shouting out for Mustang Sally or Stevie Ray (at least not Free Bird). At the same time, I was in regularly working, reasonably well paid (at least by New Mexico standards) half assed bands that did the most overplayed , hackneyed classic rock and oldies that you could imagine , and the crowds would go nuts when we'd slog our way through Brown Eyed Girl and god help me, Margaritaville.
We also had similar experiences in the "creative sessions" as you except I think that once they DIDN'T get stoned .

12. OMG
I did not know that!

never cared for the show, but love the songs I have heard on the local community radio. One programmer really likes him and plays him pretty often.

15. Nah--not watching TV no doubt helps one to be less of a dumbass
I went cold turkey with TV when they switched to digital in June of last year. Thought I'd last a month or two ; instead, I still don't have TV and feel like my IQ has gone up about 10 points just from not watching commercials, the idiotic BS that's laughably referred to as "news", etc....Almost didn't want to say anything about your post to avoid embarrassing you (obviously couldn't resist the temptation though). Remember , I'M the DUMBASS who didn't know how to post pictures ; use photobucket etc...:dunce:

16. well, I am embarrassed but deservedly so, don't you think?
commercials - I have been without teevee for well over 10 years now, and man it is the commercials that really affect me now. Like if we go to the local pizza place they have three or four teevees going at the same time (I could never handle that, even when I watched regularly!) but when a commercial comes on I get actual physical symptoms of heightened hyper-awareness and a feeling that I can only describe as major WEIRDNESS (and I have tried a fair amount of recreational substances) - VERY much like taking something mind-altering. STRANGE feeling, and it just makes me feel like ah ha! I know what is wrong with so many people...

9. "effortless" ....he really does make it look that way
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 11:23 AM by abq e streeter
it really had never occurred to me just how good he was till seeing him in person. He's been here before; I have no idea why I never had gone to the other shows, but glad I finally did.
And I'M a little jealous (but actually really happy for him) that one of my best friends ( just a local guy, but really good too) got to open for him.

18. I missed him
one year because I had to go to a graduation party 5 hours away and the next year I missed Nanci Griffith because of family commitments. Did I mention these concerts were 5,000 people or less and free of charge! :grr: :banghead:

19. I hate when that happens, but it does...missed great shows due to commitments I couldn't get out of
this show was less than 1,000 people in a beautiful outdoor setting on a warm New Mexico summer night, but was not free. (although by today's standards, and considering the high quality of the music, 25 bucks wasn't bad)
