Ok, generally, my relationship with my boss has been great. Right now, I'm a little miffed.
Here's the situation:
Our organization is funded by a grant from the state of Illinois (translation: we're not getting any money)
Part of our organization is a group that is funded by fees paid by members of the smaller group.
I've been working half for the larger group (that has no money) and half for the smaller group (which has money). I'm being paid fully by the smaller group.
Just found out that the IT manager, who works for and is paid by the larger group, is leaving.
Being the only person left in our IT department, I will be taking on virtually all of his job - occasionally I might have to contract some work to the IT manager of the organization to our south.
Was just told today that the IT manager's job won't be filled (no surprise, there's no money) - and that the boss doesn't see how I can "officially" move into that job since she just told the group with money that I'm being paid by them.
Never mind that: A. I was already doing work for the larger group with their money B. Their group is 80%+ of our current operations, so the majority of what I do will benefit them, anyway
I'm not, by any stretch, as well qualified to be the IT manager as the guy who's leaving. But, I'll be doing his job - he's actually leaving some documentation and teaching me stuff I don't know before he goes. I expect to manage to hold stuff together pretty well.
- a little history: I was in a similar position about 3 years ago when our previous IT manager left - at the time, all the info about everything IT in the organization was in the heads of 3 people who no longer worked there.
This time I've had more experience with IT, and a LOT more is documented.
Maybe I'm being petty, and I don't care if I get the IT manager title, specifically, but I think it's reasonable for me to expect SOME kind of visible recognition of the extra work and responsibility I'll be taking on.
Considering the boss is worried about morale as we lay off people and have people leave for new jobs (in large part because of the uncertainties here), she's not doing herself any favors with me right now.
(apologies for the somewhat convoluted and vague descriptions of the organizational situation<\i>
Edited to add: Oh, and everyone in the organization just got a pay cut as of July 1 - so more work and responsibility for less money.
