I left my dogs and went on a 5 day roadtrip... they have fleas!

I haven't had to have this battle in 4-5 years. I guess I was fairly lucky considering most of that time I worked at the Humane Society. I just hate vacuuming and rarely give my dogs baths.

I can still say the word "bath" to the oldest, and she bolts for the door or hides.

I have to attempt an old school remedy since my money will be funny for another week or so...

5. here is an odd one that helped us somewhat
place a small dish of water with a couple drops of liquid soap in it on the floor - someplace where the dogs can't get at it to drink.
Oddly enough, the fleas will jump in there and can't get out. And they drown.

7. Sprinkle a wee bit of garlic powder on their food.
Just a dash. And NOT garlic SALT. Each meal. You'll likely never see a flea again.

In the meantime, a bath might be enough but you may want to see your vet for a one time treatment.

9. I've heard this before
And probably why we don't get fleas much any more (except stray hitchhikers from sitters).

I usually save the last two bites of whatever I'm eating for my buddies. I likes me some garlic. :P

11. My dog kibble actually has garlic oil in it, so I don't partake.
But, for anyone else it's good advice.

I put garlic on everything so maybe it's just me now that I think of it.

8. Thanks all for the tips
I just saw 2 on the little one and the big one isn't a touchy feely type.. but is scratching. Ya see, he always scratches, so it may be in my head. hehe

I'll do my regular for a few days and if it continues or gets worse, I'll fork over the coin at the vet.

Thanks again :)

10. I've heard that this year is a bad year for fleas
My dog is really allergic to them so even one will set her off on a scratching frenzy. There was only one other year a few years ago when she had a problem, and then this year suddenly she had a major problem. I combed her every day, bathed her weekly, vacuumed often and was giving her diphenhydramine daily. A few days ago it finally subsided and the last time I combed her, didn't find one flea.

I hope that was it for the season! It was torture for both of us.

12. I have heard the same
Ive never had fleas. so far as I am aware, Not a single one of my pets has ever had fleas while living with me.

Moved to a new place, and a few days later we found fleas. I dont have a pet, and havnt had any in about 4 years, due to rental rules. The place was empty for 6 months.

How the hell did I get fleas? me personally? And do they make flea collars for large human males?

15. Im told that they are here for a long fight
I sprayed some flea stuff about. Havn't seen any since. But everyone says they will be back in a few weeks, and again and again. I dunno. I hope not. I have been lucky enough to never have bugs before. I regularly see bedbugs, roaches, etc on the job, but I am paranoid and meticulous about making sure they never come home.

16. I do hate fleas but they saved my Kimi cat's life
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 02:10 AM by kimi
Weird story. I had an infestation about 7 years ago, all 7 cats got fleas from one who got outdoors accidentally. Long long battle, oh, the vacuuming and powdering and spraying and fogging I did that summer, sheesh, and in order to get a prescription product I had to take one cat to the vet to get the script. In doing so I found out that Kimi, a Norwegian Forest Cat, has genetic cardiomyopathy, so she had an EKG with a vet cardiologist and has been on cardiac meds and baby aspirin ever since. If we hadn't had that infestation from those nasty little buggers, she probably would've dropped dead and I'd never have known what happened and would have been completely devastated, of course.

So yes, I despise fleas, but I have a grudging kind of hate/respect for them. I'll still kill any of the little f&*kers I ever see near ANY of my cats, though.

Good luck getting rid of yours!
